Fiona's Fortunes and Palm Reading

Character images created in Hero Forge Pro Booth.

In a world where magic is minimal, the minor magics are celebrated and practiced by many, leaving a space in the market for the provision of magical goods and services.

Walking into the store, a customer would be greeted with the site of crystals, bones, candles and what appears to be endless choices for tools and materials.

Though most items that are sold here aren't inherently magic in their own right, there are more magical items available for trusted customers. Fiona has to be careful who is alerted to these goods, at risk of being outed for her 'real' magic use and risk the safety of her coven.

In addition to goods, Fiona provides services covering fortune telling, palm reading, tarot readings, rune throwing and more. Regardless of whether they believe or not, many people come from all around to see her and find out what the future holds or get assistance in making decisions.

Purpose / Function

This site was erected as part of a strip of storefronts across one of the main streets in town - Velkomm Plaza.

It continues to be used for this purpose now, with this specific store being used for all sorts of magical goods and a place for Fiona to tell fortunes and perform readings for those who wish to see her.

Its neighbouring properties include a bakery, cafe, and a centre for companion creatures.

Design

The store is 40ft x 35ft total dimensions.

40ft x 10ft of this is the walled off rear section, with 10ft x 10ft being designated as a reading room.

Ceilings are a dark painted plaster, with ornate edging, and walls painted in a colour shifting purple/blue/black. There appears to be some work in progress, with partial murals along some walls. These include depictions of flowers, gems, bones, animals, stars and magical effects.

The shop floors are wooden panels, adorned with a mish mash arrangement of rugs.

Entries

One main doorway sits at the front of the store, with large windows on either side, allowing a view into the shop and any window displays.

Sensory & Appearance

Smell

This building is full of alluring smells, including incense, candles, fresh or dried herbs and flowers, perfumes and burning of items such as sage.

The smells can be detected from outside the shop, drawing people in to see more. When they enter, they are bombarded with these beautiful scents, many of which create a calming effect.

If a person is staying for a reading, or otherwise spending much time in the store, they may be welcomed to partake in a range of delicious herbal teas, adding yet another aroma to permeate the air.

Hear

Noises that can be heard include, gentle ringing or tapping of wind chimes, crackling of flames on lit candles and the occasional pitter patter of kitty cat feet.

Feel

The air in the building can at times feel thick, due to the smoke and layers of fragrance, however, despite feeling this against skin, there is always a freshness to the air that allows persons to breathe freely, as though they were standing outside.

When browsing the shelves, tables and displays, there are soft silken cloths, velvet pillows and an array of beautiful textures that most visitors can't help but touch.

See

Walking into the store, a visitor will see an environment that is both vibrant and dark at the same time, with a welcoming atmosphere and massive range of goods.

Shelves are stacked along the walls and extending into aisle, covered with books, cards, taxidermy, skulls, ingredients and more.

There is a shiny display cabinet at the main counter, presenting all the most valuable of gems and jewellery, glinting across the room.

Denizens

Fiona

Fiona is an elf, who's appearance has seen better days.

Her scarred face can be off putting to some, but she has found that it helps others take her work more seriously and not question her strength and skill.

Fiona can be found in the store most of the time, though she does live elsewhere.

Arya

Arya is a fluffy little monster who loves to keep Fiona company and helps ease visitors' minds, distracting from Fiona's looks.

Arya stays at the shop, helping keep the area clear of mice, cockroaches and other little critters.

    Alterations

Since Fiona's ownership of the site, some additional walls have been installed towards the rear of the store, to allow separation of a storage and break area, as well as a designated readings room.

Fiona is always doing or commissioning creative works around the site, including mosaics on the facade, murals on walls etc.

    Architecture

The building has been made of stone bricks, with white textured concrete across the facade.

This has been adorned with a mosaic of glass, tiles and crystals of all colours of the rainbow.

Above the doorway are hung dried flowers and herbs, bringing a pleasant smell to those passing by, helping to intrigue or draw them in.

    Defenses

There are no major defences installed for this building, however Fiona has cast some minor protection spells at the entry and does close the shopfront if she is performing readings and does not have an assistant on site.

    Tourism

The store attracts tourists who may already be exploring the area and seeing what stores are around but does on occasion draw in those interested in the occult or general magic.

To assist in bringing in business, Fiona tends to advertise in the Entrada Post, sometimes even including coupons or specials.

I adore the photography and art you did for this! It's super comprehensive in such a good way. I take it magic is illegal in your setting? Who's the most interesting visitor the shop has had?

Thanks! I appreciate that.   It is minimal magic, where those who practice it and are found out are usually taken for 'processing,' which involves a form of testing and interrogation, licencing and agreed use or application in government facilities. The aim would be to normalise it throughout the life of the campaign but have it provide some initial bonding and additional challenges for the players early on.   The world has been nowhere but in my mind and on WA as yet, but I am looking at seeing how it all pans out once I can get my group together to start playing. I'll have to think on the most interesting visitor... this is actually a really cool prompt.

Wait hold on I was looking at your profile to check out what you do & see if you're on the Discord and   What the hell are the odds that we're both in VIC?? Are you in the WA discord yet? I'd love to see you around there :o

Apparently, I have joined the WA discord, (I totally forgot) but I haven't taken the time to look through as yet. Might take a look over the weekend. I think my discord info is linked in my profile if you wanted to touch base there. :)

Now that's an exhaustive article, with pretty images! The inventory was especially inspirational for the alchemist's shop I am writing, although I am not sure I'll have this much dedication. Very good work!

Thanks! I definitely went a little extra being that I was trying to meet the World Ember word count after starting in the last couple of weeks of December. Lol. But I do usually create a basic stock list with costs for any shops that players might encounter, saves time in game. Sometimes shopping for exotic items can be fun, but having to roleplay entire shopping sessions is tedious.
