The Qeelaki Guilds

Structure

The Qeelaki Guilds are a loosely organized financial conglomerate designed to funnel money to the top.   At the top is the Qeelak Guild itself, run by the Qeelak family's head. The Qeelak guild is a "trader's guild" of sorts and most people are members of it, as well as their own personal guild.   Directly below that are guilds that help employ and specialize the community. there's tons, from the Carpenter's Guild to the Bounty Hunter's Guild. Each has it's place in the community and works to keep everything running. The head of each guild answers to the requests of the Qeelak guild, and will occasionally direct guild members to assist in community projects. Each guild has its own hierarchy within that they're allowed to set up as they will, but most have a figurehead at the top who works with high-ranking, long standing members to establish rules and benefits of membership.

Assets

The Qeelak family has access to millions of pounds of gold, and sometimes, that's all it takes to get whatever you need.

History

The Qeelak family colonized Qeelak Minoi and named it after themselves centuries ago. Since then, they've slowly but continually pushed the Forestfolk Confederacy further and further north on the island to make room for new colonists and settlers. Now, the Qeelak guilds control the southern 2/3rds of the island, leaving only the northernmost section for the wood elves.

Demography and Population

People of all races come to Qeelak to make their living and seek a better life. Often, they find themselves in just as bad, if not worse of a situation.   Largely, the guilds are ruled by high class humans and elves, while lower class people of every race skitter throughout the cities, trying to make their living. Though the island's native race of Forestfolk Elf make up a significant portion of the population, theres no race that it is uncommon to find wondering qeelak. Even the mysterious Tortles make their home here on occasion.

Territories

The Qeelak family long ago came to Qeelak Minoi and set up shop, refusing to leave. They slowly and continually pushed the Forestfolk Confederacy further and further northward, until eventually, the Guilds controlled the southern 2/3rds of the island.

Religion

Religion on Qeelak focuses on two central gods. The merfolk goddess Lucrial, Our Lady of the Coin, and the Elven goddes Herne, Goddess of the Hunt and Mediator of the Wilds, though the state officially prefers the worship of Lucrial. Other religions are not necessarily welcomed and embraced, but they are tolerated.

Foreign Relations

Foreign relations for the Qeelak guilds are complicated and strained. It's well known the Anton Qeelak himself is a pirate sympathizer, but lack of legitimate proof means the the other nations cannot take him to trial under The Treatise of the Seas. Nonetheless, his guilds create fantastic goods that people find it hard refusing to buy.

Agriculture & Industry

The guilds of Qeelak work hard to ensure the finest quality craftsmanship in the world happens there. exports from Qeelak are largely industrial. With little resources of its own aside from an abundance of wood, they instead focus on importing raw materials, crafting them into fine works of art, and then selling them back to the rest of the world at an enormous markup.

Traditionally, any craftsperson who is a member of a guild can purchase materials through the guild at a discounted price, and then hand over their work to the guild, with the promise that they will use their full power to sell it at the best possible price. The guild hands over a small payment in thanks for the item, with the promise to give the craftsperson 85 percent of the proceeds from their item, with the guild skimming a small 15% fee to keep afloat. Its a reasonable system, but in practice, there are all kinds of disputes that can and do arise.

Education

People born in the Qeelak guilds will typically recieve training in their parents trade, before being allowed to seek out an apprenticeship under another trader if they so wish around adolesence. It is entirely up to the child to further their own education, and ideally, join a guild later in life. Without guild membership, it's very hard to get your materials at a reasonable price, as well as sell your product without the label of a "trusted guild member".
