Asmaria

Rulers: King Marsal, Tarth the Benevolent, the Council Exports: Lumber, livestock, crops, stone, Deep Lead Government: Autocratic Republic   King Marsal currently rules the Kingdom of Asmaria. In the villages and fiefdoms of Asmaria, the people are hardy and strong. They recognize the danger of monsters and do well to stay away from them. However, they are nearly unmatched in their ability to reap the land of its resources and are incredibly resourceful when it comes to keeping the monsters at bay. Near the swamps, many have made their homes upon sturdy stilts, their houses connected by rope bridges. Others have built nigh impenetrable walls around their towns, hiring guards to watch over the ramparts and ensure no creatures break through. Monsters and monster attacks are not as frequent the closer a person gets to the center of the state, however towards the north and south especially, monster raids occur on a nearly monthly basis. This has ensured that many citizens of these towns have seen combat in some way, be they a protected observer or active member in a battle. People living in towns with less resources and less means to defend themselves must risk their lives to reap the land. Farmers in these less fortified settlements are hardened fighters who plant their seeds and tend to their crops with the help of trained guards lest an ogre or some other equally terrifying monster chooses to attack. In these smaller settlements, farmers have earned a weighty reputation for themselves and many common people view them as strong warriors rather than simple seed-planters. Though some people in the more civilized areas treat magic as a novelty or curiosity, many of the common folk believe it is alien and evil.   The kingdom's religion is a mix of Old Enlandic (a polytheistic religion dating back to the old human tribes) and Enlandic (a modern, more organized polytheistic religion meant to be a restructuring of the Old Enlandic religion). Old Enlandic concerns spirits and the balance of good and evil while Enlandic preaches the alliance of deities and the holy power of the Asmarian king. The central deity of Enlandic is Tartarus, followed by the gods Cancer, Libra, and Aquarius.   Enlandic worship occurs in churches and there is an influential deacon appointed to govern the church, however they do not use magic and instead preach about the dangers of magic. These appointed officials are known as Sarthilings.    The Council are a collection of men tasked with deciding on a new King every 10 years. A successor to the king is almost never of the same bloodline, as the belief that a particular bloodline be deemed as holy or divine is wrong in Enlandic customs. Thus, when a new king has governed the kingdom for a decade, they are told to step down and allow the next king to take over. While these transitions of power do not always go smoothly, they are generally without bloodshed. If a king should die at some point during his service, a replacement is put in (also decided by the Council) and given a decade until he finishes his service.    The Council also elects the next Head Sarthling, otherwise known as the Eldri'kan. The Eldri’kan has the power to appoint officials within the Faith, organize the Inquisition, and ordain what people are and are not allowed to do in accordance with the Enlandic texts.    Currently, King Marsal and Tarth the Benevolent are in a bit of a rivalry with one another, as each passes local laws to make the other’s life slightly harder.   Every 30 years, the Council members must give up their seats of power and entrust the King and the Eldri’kan to choose the next Council members.   This will repeat until the collapse of the Kingdom.
