The Journal of Bax Shu-Trupo

Entry 1     “As we are now in a new place it is only fitting that I now start a new journal. Nihila and I find ourselves in a vast, schorching hot desert after travelling through a relatively new perpendicularity (or at least it was the newest perpendicularity that we have come across in our travels). We encountered a strange masked man in The Mirror Lands who told us that they had not seen any beings on this side in a long time. While travelling through the desert known as The Parched Lands, we noticed a variety of strange creatures and vegetation that seem to have adapted to this harsh climates. One thing we found particularly curious is that the sand on this side, for whatever reason, does not behave like the sand and soil in other parts of the world. It appears to be completely preserved in The Mirror Lands and we discovered that it can even be walked across.   While Traversing the desert we also ran into more masked creatures, though these were much smaller than the one we talked to before passing through the Perpendicularity. They are also unable (or refuse) to converse with us. After observing them for a while, Nihila and I are still unable to determine the origins of these strange creatures. We will study them further as we continue our travels.   -Bax Shu-Trupo”
Entry 2     “This desert seems endless and the scenery changes often and quite dramatically. One hour we might be walking through a cracked, barren, landscape and the next we might be climbing sand dunes that could be mistaken for mountains. Yesterday we passed through a salt flat and Nihila nearly burned her hand off over one of the crystallized salt pools! Thankfully she was saved by a member of the travelling caravan who we joined up with day before. The denizens of this scorching land are very friendly, and have shown us many tricks to help us survive the harsh climate. They seem to be particularly advanced for a civilization that appears to be so young. The visions granted to them by their Dawnstones has helped them progress faster than any other civilization we have encountered in our travels. The people here thrive and there is virtually no conflict. On our travels yesterday we met a strange new group of people. They towered over us and cast an imposing silhouette with their two massive shadows and pale eyes. Yet, our travelling companions greeted them with open arms, though they also had never encountered such a race of people before. They even invited them along with us back to their capital to meet their king. It is quite uplifting seeing two cultures, who are so dramatically different in every way, interact with each other in such a positive and civil manner. I could tell my family back home a thousand stories about the giant worms and insects in this desert, but it’s stories like these that they always have the hardest time believing.   -Bax Shu-Trupo”
Entry 3     “The Yoxia (as they call themselves) are an old race. At first it appeared they didn’t even speak our language, but after interacting with us for a couple hours, they were able to pick up our language and speak to us quite fluently. We have been travelling for many days now on our way to the Shairean capital and they have shared with us many stories of the past. One that particularly peaked our interest was a story of Kestramore, a former goddess of Ruin (potential Shard-Bearer?) who turned on her people and threatened to bring destruction to the world. The Yoxai shared with us their stone tablets, depicting the goddess leveling the land in a show of power that looked eerily similar to Sareash’s destruction of the Corvaran city of Thendall before he was defeated. I have never heard of a Shard travelling from its home before, but after Sareash’s defeat the shard was lost, so it is possible the Shard could have somehow found its way here. The Yoxai seem to know very little about the Shards. They were able to subdue and contain what we would call a “Shard” thanks to the sacrifice of one of their other gods, but they could not figure out how to destroy it. This lines up with Nahila’s notes and theories about the destruction and creation of Shards. We were both relieved to find out that some of our theories actually seem to hold some merit. Unfortunately, the Yoxai would not disclose where they had contained the Shard, for fear that it may be released again. They are afraid of this Kestramore and they say that if she were to return, they are not sure they would be able to stop her again. Tomorrow our little caravan should arrive at the capital. Both Nahila and I are excited to explore this new city and thanks to the Yoxai, the new potential diplomacy means we might actually get to meet with the king as well!   -Bax Shu-Trupo”
Entry 4     “Well, Nahila and I met the king today and it went...shockingly well actually. Nahila and I both have very little experience with royalty and politics, but we managed to hold our own! When we arrived at the Shairean capital of Storms Break we were greeted by many people and excited stares. It seems that the people here become quite ecstatic at the thought of any new and/or foreign concepts, which i guess also includes a strange desert race of giant like beings which they have never seen before. We were quickly shepherded through the city and to the palace and we barely had time to take any notes at all. I must make sure to explore the city more tomorrow before the feast. We were also invited to a feast tomorrow, but I am getting ahead of myself...   After literally climbing a mountain, our rag tag caravan of strangers arrived at the palace and were greeted personally by the Shairean king and his court.   King Galothar (or King Dawnlord Galothar as his official title states), was probably the most excitable king I’ve ever met (granted I have only ever met one other king in my life, but I imagine most kings are usually more regal...not to discredit Galothar though. He introduced us to his court and immediately gave us a tour of his palace.   King Galothar is an innovator, he showed us all the blueprints that he had his “best artificers” draw up and they were quite astounding. One of the blueprints was even of a vehicle that Galothar claimed could “travel 5 times as fast as a bromal at full gallop”.   As we continued on, the king showed us many interesting pieces of art and told us many stories of his life. We even met his son Prince Eloshar and his betrothed Anara. Eloshar seemed just as passionate as his father.   The king brought us all into his personal prayer chamber where he insisted we join him in prayer to celebrate their meeting. Of course Nahila and I agreed, any chance to learn more about a new culture we were going to take. The Yoxai were a bit more reluctant but also agreed, they seem to be a bit more reserved and protective of their religion and culture than the Shaireans, but honestly there are few people who I have ever met who are less reserved than the Shairians.   Nahila insists that I add in that I am being rather biased in my writing and that the kings court were indeed much more reserved. I would like to add that this is my journal and if Nahila wants to add anything, she can write it in her own journal which she treasures so much. But I must agree that I was also rather fond of the kings court. Adran and Amafrey seemed very down to earth and had a good sense of humour, and we learned just as much from Gandar as we did from the King himself. Laucien was a bit stiff, but I am constantly afraid that I too come across that way to strangers...but I digress.   We were all fascinated by the Kings prayer method of burning glyphs that were painted onto a piece of cloth or parchment. However the most interesting thing we saw was what the court referred to as “The Kings Dawnstone” Sitting at the centre of the prayer room, the Kings Dawnstone must have been at least 5 feet in diameter. I don’t even think the Yoxai had seen a Dawnstone that size before as they were at a complete loss for words. The king seemed very entertained by this, though he was noticeably more protective of the Stone, especially around the Yoxai. He was very adamant that none of us touch it, but I have a feeling that comment wasn’t directed at Nahila and I.   Apparently the Kings Dawnstone is the largest Dawnstone on Obrios. However, Gandar informed me as we were leaving that it is far too big for anyone to bond to and is purely ornamental, but none the less, it is an impressive gem. I had many more questions, but I can tell that Gandar was getting a tad suspicious of me. Apparently a lot of the questions I asked seemed to have very obvious answers...hopefully tomorrow night after having explored the city and learning more, I will be able phrase my questions in such a way that makes me appear like less of a foreigner. Nahila does not think that is very likely though. King Galothar had to return to his other duties, but he was very stricken by the Yoxai and insisted that the Yoxai join the Obrios peace treaty. The Yoxai agreed and they are sending for more of their diplomats to attend the treaty feast tomorrow. Both Nahila and I also received invitations and are very exciting to be witnessing history! Now we just have to find something appropriate to wear...   -Bax Shu-Trupo”
Entry 5   “Tonight was a disaster...a tragedy even. King Dawnlord Galothar was murdered. Nahila and I are currently in our rooms in the palace with guards stationed outside our doors. I am unsure if it is for our own safety or if we are suspect and it is for the safety of others. Either way, the whole city is in chaos. I wanted to write this all down while it was still fresh in my mind...but it should be noted that I may have indulged myself in a drink or two tonight. Therefore Nahila has agreed to go over my recollection and notes after I have written them and add her own memories where mine might be considered “compromised”.   Nahila’s additions will be labeled as such: **Nahila’s additions**   The night started off wonderfully. The King had some of his best tailors bring different outfits to our rooms in the palace for us to try on. I found a particularly beautiful robe which had been enchanted to appear to have a flowing rivers that ran along all the seams. It was wonderful **If the objective of this journal is clarity and honestly, it should be noted that the colour of the robe was really quite ghastly.** After we were dressed, we left our rooms and were brought to a large banquet hall, where we were seated and also conversed with members of the court and guests as they arrived. **this is where Bax’s “over indulgence” began...** It is remarkable how many different races and cultures there are here. I wish that every time we visited a new place we could just throw a feast like this, in one night I have learned more about the different religions and races of Obrios than I would have if I had spent two weeks travelling around and talking to people. I am particularly fond of the Tabaxi people and I find their tails to be particularly fascinating. **umm ok?** The religions of this world are fascinating and while there are many similarities between all the religions, each one seems to have a different opinion on the origin of the Dawnstones power. Nahila and I had a very interesting conversation with a man (who I could have sworn had the slightest trace of a Corvaran accent **he didn’t**) and his ward. They both had a fascinating take on the investiture and the amount of energy absorbed and it’s correlation with the visions received and the colour of ones Dawnstone. **while I highly doubt that the man was Corvaran like Bax speculates, I did find it odd that the two of them seemed to be more aware of investiture than anyone that we have encountered in our travels here so far**   As the night continued, the party got even more exciting. There were speeches and much praise for the King Dawnlord. There was even dancing lead by Prince Eloshar and his fiancé Anara. There was also much excitement after the two announced the date of their wedding. **It should be noted that the prince dances very well.**   The Yoxai then presented the king with a gift of peace, a very old plate with twelve indentations around the edge. **it is more than just “a very old plate”. The Yoxai proclaimed that the tray is very important to their culture. They claim that it is the same tray that the gods used to present the original Dawnstones to the Council of Origins when they were founded. Bax has clearly not been paying enough attention to the significance of the Council since we have been here! It should also be noted that while Bax claims that everyone seems to get along very well, I have noticed that a lot of people appear almost afraid of the Yoxai at times. When I inquired about it I learned that this is because of the “Fateless” nature of the Yoxai and the fear and prejudice that the title brings with it. This is very clearly a point of contention here on Obrios as people seem to be constantly approaching the young Juspian King (who’s name if spelt out, would fill this entire journal) and arguing with him about Fateless rights and regulations**   After the gifting of the old plate, the King, his guard and the Yoxai representatives all proceeded to the Kings Prayer room, where they were to sign the Peace Treaty. **Adran explained to me that all important decrees and declarations are to be signed under witness of the sun goddesses.**   The party continued in the Kings Absence, and a play was performed with elaborate puppets, depicting the event known as “The Fracture” however, we only made it halfway through the performance before the screaming started. Immediately the Prince and future Princess were rushed out of the hall. Mass confusion spread and no one really knew what was going on. **It should be stated for the record that Bax hid under a table at this point in the story**   Moments later, the banquet hall filled with the kings guard. After surrounding and detaining us, they took the remaining Yoxai diplomats away. We are still unsure where they moved them to. We managed to find Amafrey, Adran and Laucien among the chaotic crowd who told us the grim news about the kings death. They told us that the guards watching the door to the prayer room heard yelling during the treaty signing and after managing to break down the door, discovered that the Yoxai had murdered the king and his guards and stole the Kings Dawnstone. None in the room survived the Yoxai assault. The door guards managed to break into the prayer room in time to spot the last of the Yoxai making their escape through one of Galothar’s hidden passageways, carrying the Kings Dawnstone with them.   News spread through the crowd quickly and people started to panic, but thankfully Amafrey and Laucien managed to calm the crowd. I noticed that Adran looked deeply troubled during all of this, but whatever was bothering him, he did not share. **I also noticed that Adran seemed more troubled and contemplative than the others. I believe he was wondering the same thing that I was. How did the Yoxai learn of this secret passage in the kings chambers after only arriving the day before?**   After many rounds of questioning from the guards, (lead by a man who clearly was in over his head after climbing a couple ranks because of the deaths of his superiors) we were finally allowed to retire to our rooms for the night, though a few select people were taken away and detained.   As this all began, Nahila and I are now both in our separate rooms and unfortunately, there is nothing neither of us can do until the morning. As fascinating as this whole trip has been, for the first time in many months, I wish I was at home in my own bed and not locked in a guarded room in a foreign palace. **This is one thing I think we can both agree upon brother.**   -Bax Shu-Trupo   **Annotations by Nahila Shu-Trupo**”       Final Entry in Journal   “Today Nahila and I stumbled upon the most amazing temple, One of the Great Storms hit and we ran to take shelter in a cave at the base of the large mountain the locals refer to as the Kestramore Steps. Upon entering we found a strange story on the wall with musical notation at the bottom. Fortunately for us, Nihila is well versed in the Otiqua and between the two of us, we were able to figure out the riddle on the wall rather quickly. The next part of this temple proved to be more difficult, presenting us with a large wall that we had to traverse. If we climbed onto the wrong platform, we would be electrocuted, rather violently I might add, and more than once we were sent falling back to the floor below. After many hours of trial and error Nihila and I made it to the top, after a rather exciting ascent where I may have accidentally destroyed a couple of the platforms...   Upon reaching the top we found a chamber containing a small library...well not just any small library, but this very library where you, dear reader, have found this journal. Though this library may be tiny, Nihila and I have found it to be one of the most useful sources of information that pre-dates the death of the shard-bearer that we have found since we have arrived on this world. It has also given us insight into the nature of investiture here on Obrios.   After having spent many hours in here reading the library’s contents and after thorough discussion, we have decided to leave my journal behind to remain here. After all, what is the point of cataloguing and writing down our studies if we did not wish to share them?   Nihila of course refuses to part with her journal and so we will continue to record our future findings in that. Parting with my journal will be difficult, but I hope whoever finds it next will share our excitement about the strange happenings of the universe.   -Bax Shu-Trupo”
