Personal history

  • Born one of the gens de couleur libres in the fall of 1814 in New Orleans Louisiana to Cecile Roque, the daughter of a well known and respected oracle (Delphine Roque) and Jean-Michel Broussard, son a wealthy plantation owner. Although this was prior to the miscegenation laws (that would come with the influence of American colonialism) Cecile and Jean-Michel were not formally wed, and Cecile was instead his mistress. Despite this Jean-Michel favored Cecile and his daughter over his legal family.
  • At the age of seventeen, Serafine met, was courted by and later married a displaced sorcerer Blackwell sorcerer from the UK. He died in a carriage accident when a road washed out during a summer storm (now recognized as a hurricane), leaving her a young widow at nineteen.
  • Lacking the familial skills of Sight and other Talents3, Serafine nevertheless used her position as a widow (therefore not needing a husband to provide for her) to involve herself more thoroughly in the supernatural world and began to support her aunt, Elizabet, and grandmother in their endeavors. When her grandmother died she was well placed to assist her aunt and soon became quite adept in political maneuvering in the supernatural world.
  • Serafine was able to negotiate a truce between the local supernatural population which permitted the family owned boarding house to become a sanctuary for misplaced supernaturals.
  • While "apprenticing" with her aunt, Jean-Michel introduced Serafine to a distant cousin of his, a widow by the name of Jean-Pierre Chevalier. It was hoped that if Serafine shared Jean-Pierre's interest that she would move away from the supernatural world.
  • Serafine had no desire to marry again or be "beholden" to a man in such a way, and spurned all romantic attempts by Jean-Pierre. However, the two did become friends and eventually she became his mistress.
  • Serafine and Jean-Pierre had one son, Louis Chevalier Roque, born in 1836.
  • Due to her involvement with the Maison de Sanctuaire, Louis spent much time with at his father's home in the country though he frequently visited his mother and great-aunt.
  • In 1842 Serafine a charismatic vampire by the name of Ian Boyle (an alias of Kieran Collins) took up residence in the Maison and in New Orleans. At first finding him arrogant, Serafine would warm to the man.
  • Ian and Serafine became good friends and he also charmed young Louis.
  • Due to the volatile nature of vampire politics, Ian (and Serafine) by default were caught in the middle of a coup to oust the current vampire Master of New Orleans and the Alpha of the werewolf pack. Serafine and her son were attacked and nearly killed, restored back to health only by Ian's blood.
  • After the attack, Jean-Pierre, who would be traveling long term to New York and then France insisted on taking Louis with him. Serafine agreed knowing her son would be safer far away from New Orleans.
  • With Louis gone, Ian convinced Serafine that staying would be foolish for her as well. She could travel with him and return when things played out.
  • There would be no return for Serafine in the way that she hoped as she contracted tuberculosis during her "voluntary exile" and on her deathbed asked Ian to turn her.
  • As a vampire Serafine is frequently not far from her Sire. She toured the United States, Canada and Europe. She did return to New Orleans for a short while to watch Louis from afar. Eventually she re-established contact with him, beginning the process of watching and interacting with her descendants. It is a practice she continues to this day.

Speech

As a call back to her Louisiana heritage, Serafine speaks with a softly hinted at southern, New Orleans accent. (It's an affectation, as she is quite capable of mimicking a number of accents and regional dialects.)
