Steam Engines
It was alchemists working in laboratories that gave genesis to the idea of steam power. Heating flasks and bubbling distilleries would push against the stoppers of the beakers, and it required a careful eye to make sure that the pressure buildup did not rupture a beaker or shatter a flask.
Later, as metallurgy became more and more refined, pressurized boilers and fire boxes were combined with simple pistons, and steam could finally be used to do work. As steam technology evolved, more powerful and efficient engines were created, and the concept of steam power diversified.
