Krymzk

Geography

The land is one large dune of grey sand. No river flows through this unbearably cold hell-scape, but since the "nation" of Krymzk is located by the ocean, the residents have all the water they need... that is, if The Coven of Ruskial didn't regulate who can and can't take from this endless source of nourishment.

Ecosystem

Krymzk is a cold desert due to the mana pollution--the result of decades of experimentation with magic by the desert's inhabitants--which hangs like a smog over the land, and has turned the sky as gray as the sand. It's because of this pollution that the wild life is much different from their Verte-Paysagian counterparts. Take the bisorberus for instance, a towering behemoth of an animal, which is Krymzk has been reduced to a stunted, shriveled thing, with one or two of its three heads missing. In fact some of the animals don't act the way the usually do--the thunder hawk, a proud and noble hunter, now reduced to a bloated carrion eater called a carcass fiend, and the snap dragon root now lies in wait under the sand to snare its victims. In fact the pollution is so toxic that it is ill advised to visit Krymzk, as the air is difficult to breath, and if one stays long enough they can develop sores and rashes--not to mention mutations. The inhabitants of Krymzk are well adapted to this hellish environment, though they themselves are now twisted monstrosities no longer resembling human beings.

Ecosystem Cycles

The desert is cold all year round, and only escalates as winter approaches, with the nights growing longer, and the more dangerous predators coming out of their summer hibernation, and the few flying birds making their yearly migration over the mountains to torment the inhabitants of Western Verte-Paysage. Once spring rolls around the whether becomes tolerable, but this only lasts for two to three months before "chilled summer" rolls around.

Localized Phenomena

One weather phenomenon that the inhabitants fear above all else is the "knife storm," a special sand storm that happens often, that is powerful enough rip apart wooden structures, and can tear the flesh off of a man; though this is because of the sand itself, as a majority of the sand's composition is a crystalline deposit that can only be found in Krymzk. That, and even the rain and snow are something to fear, as the rain can horribly mutate one's skin--though non native will find their skin will burn--and the polluted snow grows more compact, fusing with other snow flakes to become hail. And then there's the geysers, which have random patterns of erupting, and some have the potential to block out the sun.

Fauna & Flora

Ironically enough, the bigger creatures are the weakest, while smaller creatures thrive, feeding off the slow and feeble creatures that would've been nigh impossible to kill if they lived in other lands. Most of the smaller species that survive are parasitic species, such as the gutter, a worm that burrows in a creatures intestines and slowly eats the host alive from the inside. Even plants are dangerous, as most of them are some form of creeper vine that grows poisonous thorns, or cactuses that can shoot their spines in self defense. One creature that seems to have no natural predators--and is one of the few larger species to thrive in Krymzk--is a species that is half crab, half centipede, called a "sand strider", which the people of Krymzk have domesticated for the purpose of transportation.

Natural Resources

Like the Lost Wilds, the only valuable resources are those that could be used for killing, such as the polluted air, which some have used as a gaseous poison. Yet the sand has value in some places, as heating the sand can create a strange gray glass flecked with white, which is even to create glass sculptures depicted scenes of death and bloodshed.

History

Krymzk was once a separate continent, until around 150 A.E, when the western half of Verte-Paysage broke off from its eastern cousin, and collided with Krymzk. A mountain chain formed between the two continents, and soon the once lush and green land became a vast desert. The native inhabitants soon began to experiment with the forces of magic, and as time wore on the species of plants and animals from other dimensions began to appear, the air became unbreathable, the sky grew gray with polluted air. Attempts were made during the early days of Western Verte-Paysage's colonization to explore and/or settle this desert lands, though these explorers never knew that they'd find a hellish landscape. And the inhabitants were less than welcome, who either slaughtered these explorers, or used them for their sick experiments.

Tourism

The only people who visit Krymzk are scientists, enterprising warlocks looking for new spells or lost knowledge, and thrill seekers wishing to explore the twisted land, though a rebreather is required, as well as a full body clothing.
