Head of the Hunt

Qualifications

Usually The Head of the Hunt is a skilled monster hunter, and the inheritor must be a direct descendant of Ulysses Bachmann--not a thrice removed cousin, or a bastard, or a distant niece/nephew from another branch of the family.

Requirements

The inheritor must be sixteen or older, otherwise the predecessor wife or brother will run things in his stead till he reaches age, and must be the first born of the predecessor's children. But if the inheritor is proven to be weak of spirit, or unfit in any capacity, then the title will go to the next child.

Appointment

After the original Head dies or retires, his inheritor goes through a ceremony in which the head lore master, the council of five, and the predecessor's brothers/sisters--along with the mother/father of the inheritor--see him into office. First he is knighted with Ulysses Bachmann's rapier, and is granted his flintlock as a badge of office, and after having gunpowder sprinkled on his head--a symbol of Lodorum's favor--he swears an oath to uphold his office, and all the duties that entails.

Duties

The Head of The Hunt is responsible for making sure future generations of Bachmanns receive the best education and training in the field of monster hunting, to punish those Bachmanns that break the family code of honor, and to be a shining example of honor on the hunt.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include authorizing certain requests from different branches of the family, like new equipment or funds, validating a new item to be catalogued in the archives, overseeing ceremonial duties and traditions; making sure students training on castle grounds are being trained properly, and treated well--or at least well enough, as-some students need the right amount of discipline--and to manage the accounts of the Bachmann family.

Benefits

Along with the monetary gains, there is also a lot of prestige associated with the title, as the Bachmann family is one with a long and proud lineage, and a family to be feared. And given that the Bachmanns are now recognized as a Great Baron house, they even rub shoulders with the elite, and now have more access to assets relating to the trade of monster hunting--gold and silver mines, garlic farms, mistletoe gardens, etc.

Accoutrements & Equipment

Along with the flintlock, The Head of the Hunt also wears a wide brimmed hat, with the family crest pinned to the crown.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

If any of the codes of honor are broken--the worst of these being cowardice--or if he/she proves to be inept, then the new Head will either be impeached from office, and depending on the severity of his actions, he may even be exiled.

History

Though the Bachmann family puts much importance on their progenitor, Ulysses, and revolve much of their tradition around him, the Head of the Hunt wasn't established until the time of Ulysses' third son Huard--who inherited Ulysses' fortune through a contest set up by the elder Bachmann. After amassing a significant nest egg, Huard established the Bachmanns as an official noble house hold, and in honor of the trade he and his father took, he also made it a tradition for the family to be a monster hunting guild.

Cultural Significance

The Bachmanns are a widespread family, and as such the title is to be feared. By the wave of his or her hand the whole family will act to bring down a Great House, by his words the family is swayed to violence if even the slightest offense is made against them. It's happened before, and with too few pieces to pick up.
