Vises Nocma

Crosslinks' Spear was known to inflict those who came into contact with it after the battle with Exbus Cholus, and although you could recover from this, the healing came with a side effect of Vises Nocma which left recovering paladins and wizards in a state of disarray.   The condition causes delirium in high temperatures, random magic in extremely cold temperatures, and awful night terrors. After a number of years inflicted with this, if the symptoms are not lessened by restoration spells which are topped up frequently, the victim goes mad and the wild magic becomes a permanent fixture of their life. In some cases, this can be mild and go unnoticed for years, in others it is clear and the victims - who are no longer able to be saved - are sent to live out their days on Asaepberg, an island just off the coast of Wresa, alongside fellow victims. Bushena thought this kindest, and the island has been protected with magical wards to prevent wild magic breaking through.   Examples of disasters as a result of the madness include wildfire on forests, exploding buildings, heads imploding or exploding, and people around the inflicted showing up inside out.

Transmission & Vectors

Vises Nocma is thought to originate from those suffering from Exbus Cholus, and since then can be transmitted through close emotional contact with the victims. Unfortunately this means that a lot of sufferers either lose life long relationships, or are unable to find closeness, else those who are clear of the illness will become infected. There are many documented cases however of partner's and other loved ones sacrificing their good health in order to remain close, this is seen as a very brave act and not one to be taken lightly.

Causes

The illness began with Exbus Cholus, a magical disease which was brought on by close contact with Crosslinks' Spear after the battle.

Symptoms

Common
  • Small bursts of wild magic when cold
  • Mild delerium when the sufferer is hot
  • Night terrors
Uncommon
  • Large instances of wild magic when only slightly chilly
  • Delirium when the subject is warm
Rare
  • Extreme night terrors with sleep walking, ending in someone physically hurt
  • Wild magic and delirium in any condition
Symptoms can be treated (see Treatment) but if this is not effective, the victim can go mad, with wild magic a permanent feature of their life and hallucinations of their worst night terrors. At this point the victims become a risk to others as well as themselves, and they are often sent to live their days on Asaepberg.

Treatment

The treatment of Vises Nocma is done by way of mitigating the effects, unfortunately no cure has yet been discovered. This is carried out by spell casters experienced in healing magic, and there are a few clinics around the world (namely in Xarith, Hilford and Kreubert) where those afflicted can go to seek support. Bushena herself is known to visit the healing keeps from time to time to aid the work of the staff.   Due to the nature of the illness, and the complex spell work needed to treat symptoms, there is a limit on how many folk can be treated at a time and some places will charge greater amounts of gold for the same treatment as others. It is best to contact ahead of travelling should you need treatment yourself.

Prognosis

Unfortunately Vises Nocma is currently incurable, and so ultimately it is a condition which is life-long. Some treatment of symptoms is possible, but the disease can fluctuate depending on the environment and when the host last received treatment.   Unfortunately once the sufferers become severely ill, which can happen very quickly if treatment is not sought, delirium and wild magic along with severe hallucinations will take over, and it becomes impossible for a victim to live out their life normally in civilisation.   At this point they are sent to Asaepberg to live out their days, it is not recommended for family to visit their loved ones here due to the dangerous nature of the lands.

Prevention

There is talk at present of a prevention amulet being forged by experienced spell casters in conjunction with the top blacksmiths and jewellers from across the world, but at present no current prevention method exists aside from avoiding emotional contact with those suffering from Vises Nocma.
