Magistrate

Warriors of justice, upholders of the law, and defenders of the masses. Magistrates are mages who have earned the title and responsibilities of the most respected career in the world.   The key responsibility of a magistrate is to defend the public. Whether it be wistorm or rogue mage, the dangers of wist and the power it has necessitates the existence of those who wield it to protect. It takes a long time to become a magistrate, and many who try to get the position fail.   If a magistrate is found to be corrupt or incapable of performing their duties to the public, a case can be made to the Arch-Magistrate. The average Arch-Magistrate deposes ten magistrates a year, out of a pool of around one thousand.   All in all, it is a lofty and respected position, with a cushy amount of job security and power should one not abuse it.

Career

Qualifications

It takes at least ten years of education at a University to become a magistrate, with the final three years being a combination of field work and final dissertation. A magistrate is expected to be in full control of their wisthread, and know the widespread fundamentals of the laws they are to uphold.

Career Progression

Magistrates have the ability to entwine up to five non-magistrates into their duty. They take full responsibility for the actions of their subordinates. This is how most get their start as they train and study to become proper magistrates. A magistrate normally takes on a few close friends and allies that they can trust to act with the proper intentions and intelligence of a magistrate.   After being entwined for at least three years, and receiving approval from the full committee at their university, they are made a magistrate.

Payment & Reimbursement

Magistrates receive a large share of the income of their patron university. This offers a good amount of income compared to the average person.

Other Benefits

Magistrates are given full lodging at their university, even after retirement. This provides a steady number of professors for the university to have on campus.

Perception

Purpose

Magistrates perform the standard duties expected of a mage, as well as their work in upholding the law and representing their university. The most common offenders of the law that magistrates must control are the adventurers, a looser organization of guilds that travel into the deeper corrupted and wist affected lands to scour and purify the areas of wistbeasts. Too often a botched expedition will leave a big mess for the Magistrates to clean up.   Together with the adventurers and military wistworkers, the magistrates make up one third of all workers that are defined as "Mages".

Social Status

While most greatly apreciate and respect magistrates, there are some who have reason to despise them. They come from many walks of life, from the petty criminals who are made to be prey hunted by these unflappable hunters, to the scrubs and lesser wistworkers who dislike the amount of social mobility offered exclusively to those who have the talent or wealth available to get a place as a Magistrate.

Demographics

About one in two thousand people works as a magistrate or entwined, with the average shifting higher in more educated areas.

History

Magistrates come from the original line of mages, and their title is a portmanteau of Mage and Administrator, Magic Administrator, or Mage Administrator being far too long a title for the common tongue.

Operations

Dangers & Hazards

Magistrates can be rather stretched thin. With ten thousand the southern states, and about thirty thousand entwined, that means there is only forty thousand to cover a population of over sixty-nine million. This means they tend to collect around major population centers and at the edge of wistorm affected areas.
