History
Long ago there was a city that existed on an island off the shores of southwestern Nielea. The citizens there enjoyed a relatively peaceful life because their their prosperous city benefited from being in an advantageous sea trade location. They relied on a council of prophets to help guide their city in the most peaceful way possible, relying on their visions of the future to let them know of what dangers might have faced them. But one day, the prophets saw the coming of natural disasters that would doom their city. While they were trusted for their visions, many of the citizens had doubts of how the prophets interpreted the vision and accused them of fearmongering and abusing their influence. A rift between the citizens formed between those who believed in the prophets, and those who did not believe in them. This in turn led to petty fights and riots between the sides that believed the prophets and wanted to flee, and those who thought the prophets were trying to manipulate them.
Out of options to save their city, the council called on the most powerful mages in the city who could be trusted, and asked them for a solution. Nor were the mages numerous enough to create protection for enough of the city and citizens for long enough to survive the distastes.
In the end, they decided on a way they could preform a massive spell- but at a cost. They could turn the entire city into a ritual circle to convert themselves into higher beings to save their kind, but at the costs of the lives of the mages and prophets in order to fuel the spell. Then the citizens who were still loyal would be instructed to use their newfound power to power a second prepared ritual that would shield the city and its citizens.
The council of prophets agreed to this plan, willing to sacrifice themselves and perhaps their people's view of them in exchange for the safety of their people and city. They then relied on the most trustworthy citizens and the mages to prepare the ritual circle. In the meantime, the council did their best to quell the violence and fear that had torn apart the citizens by reassuring that their safety had been guaranteed.
On the last day as hurricanes neared, and volcanic activity spiked, the mages and council met in the town square at the enter of the ritual circle. They began the chants, channeling all of their magic and souls into the spell. As the citizens cowered in the buildings, some watched from their homes in confusion as some of their fellow people
