Session 2: Cracking Open a Cold One with the Bois

General Summary

Following their encounter with the quondam tree, the party sleeps and all have strange dreams.
  • Kang dreams about becoming a giant and wakes up with a magic hammer
  • Ping dreams about being underwater and unlocking some untapped potential in her heirloom fishing rod. When she wakes, she can tell something has changed.
  • Lei dreams that her shadow came to life, and then it actually did.
  • Silas has a nightmare, overwhelmed by guilt, shame, and dread. He dreads someone finding out about him entering the forest without permission and killing wolves, and is worried that the ones that got away could report back. In his dream, the mystical tree rises again, turning into a bow to shoot an arrow into his heart. He wakes up to find a magical bow made from the tree’s remains.
  • As they reconnect, the party realizes that they look different.
  • Kang resembles a half-orc with a larger frame, grey-green skin, and tusks
  • Lei’s eyes are now purple, her skin tinged similarly, and horns have sprouted from her head.
  • Ping looks mostly the same, but her eyes are gold, and parts of her skin shimmer like gold in the light. Some golden scales have appeared on parts of her body.
  • Silas’ senses have become more potent, his features more bestial. He holds himself differently, feels more connected to nature, and his eyes are wolfish.
After discussing their changes in their appearance and newfound ability to manipulate aura and essence, the adventurers head southeast back towards the city. On the way, they come across a small cave where someone had left a cache of equipment.   On their way back to the city, after the cave, the adventurers spot an animal trail which Silas identifies as the tracks of a giant boar. Remembering the story of the woodsman, Liang, and his lost silver axe, he convinces the party they should follow the trail. Silas leads the group to a large animal den where they come across a massive boar with icicle spines along its back. Likely some sort of magical beast, they are wary. They see that it is asleep and also has a silver axe buried in its side. Silas decides to set a trap and the party gets in position. Everything was going great under Lei tripped and made too much noise, drawing the beast’s attention. The massive beast trampled over the trap, unheeded, and blasted the party with its icy breath. Silas was able to use his newfound ability to manifest a Beast Mark after being subjected to the boar’s power. He will be able to use its power in the future.   The party worked together to take the beast down, Ping snagging it with her magical fishing pole and tearing open its hide as Lei let loose dark, fiery magic. Kang swung his hammers and Silas got in a few well-aimed arrows. The beast fell and seemed to be down, but it kept getting back up. After eventually killing it, the party paused to inspect the body. As they feared, this wintery boar was indeed a sufficiently magical beast to leave behind a Soultrace. The spiritual echo rose to continue the fight, issuing forth a cloud of icy mist before throwing attacks blindly. Lei got in a lucky shot with a bolt of dark flame, dispersing the mist so the rest of the party could combine their efforts to defeat the spirit.   Kang dealt the killing blow with the silver axe he had recovered from the corpse, confirming that silver is indeed particularly effective against Soultraces. With the boar defeated, the party harvested its remains.   The group later returns home without further incident and they go their separate ways to rest for the rest of the day, planning to meet again in the The Grinning Wolf Lodge. Kang later decides not to return the silver axe to the woodsman.   When the party reconnects, the innkeeper, Feng, remarks on Silas’s changed appearance, congratulating him on no longer being a Drab. The party breaks their fast and discusses their adventure, with Silas sharing his concerns about their trespassing. Soon after, a messenger arrives to call Silas and company to meet with the First Elder. It is not a request. After taking a moment to get their story straight, the messenger leads them across the city to the Wolf Clan's Council Hall, where they expect to face the consequences of their actions.
