High Autumn

One of New Z'hrat's four High Holidays, the autumnal equinox is deeply important to Z'hratian society. Before industrialization, most surface-dwelling Z'hratians were sustinence farmers, and High Autumn marked the beginning of the harvest season.   As with all the High Holidays, all schoolchildren and non-essential workers are given the week off leading up up to the equinox. Originally, this was done in order for the entire neighborhood to participate in the harvesting and preservation of crops, and it was fairly common to share or trade surplus produce with other members of the community so that everyone's pantry would be stocked for the winter.   In modern days, when corporate guild-run farms are far more common than small family ones, the average person rarely participates in the process of harvesting (aside from pick-your-own produce events, like apple orchards, which are reasonably popular around this time of year). But the theme of community and brotherhood and abundance continues to this day. Popular traditions include gift exchanges, donating to or volunteering at Greensoul food banks, and having friends, neighbors, or co-workers over for a potluck meal.
