Faeries

To this day, Z'hratians have no idea where faeries- and, by extension, all the other feybloods- came from. All of the other sapient species in New Z'hrat tell a story about how and why their patron deity created them, but the fey do not. There are many different speculations: that fey are an unintended side effect of the intersection between nature and magic, or that they are nature spirits that science hasn't yet determined the origin of, or maybe that they've been created by the Celebrant of Fortune herself and are simply remaining unusually tight-lipped about that fact.   Very little is known about faeries. Most feybloods keep to their own pocket dimension, which has been seen by very few other Z'hratians. Those who have been there report that time, magic, and even physics itself has been bent to the whims of the fey. Therefore, many of them don't feel like they fit in to the greater Z'hratian society, and are unlikely to have left their pocket dimension. Those that have arrived in Z'hrat are statistically insignificant, struggle to communicate due to the extremely alien nature of the other dimension, and, because they've chosen to move, are already outliers in any sort of cultural data set.     Faeries are often perceived as tricksters, due to having boundless creativity and a different set of moral guidelines than other Z'hratians. Rather than considering things like kindness and generosity as the definition of "good," fey goodness is often defined by cleverness and spreading joy to the people they consider to be part of their clan.   Faeries are bound by a mystical law that prevents them from telling lies, which makes them natural contract lawyers; while very few actually live in New Z'hrat, most of them find themselves drawn to the Z'hratian Regulatory Council for that reason. Some others are found in the Z'hratian Engineering Coalition   using their creativity to make Z'hrat feel a bit more like their native dimension, and others can be found among their wood-elf cousins in the Greensoul .

Basic Information

Anatomy

Faeries are tiny human-like bipeds with insectoid wings, capable of flight and magic. Some of them have antennae, while others can manipulate their hair to use as feelers.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Like most mystical creatures, they live off of magic. Some variants can photosynthesize, and many on Z'hrat will eat human foods for the fun of it, even though their bodies aren't capable of breaking it down for energy.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Z'hratians aren't sure. There are too few of them on the world, and those that are there have spread out widely. All they know is that the faeries have some way of determining clans that aren't necessarily familial, defining ingroups and outgroups in inscrutable ways.

Facial characteristics

Most faeries have narrow, angular features.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

A few faeries can be found on Z'hrat, but they'll tell of a hidden pocket dimension filled with many more.

Average Intelligence

Approximately the same as a human, although sometimes, that's hard to notice because they are unlikely to have knowledge or understanding of Z'hrat.
Scientific Name
Feybloods
Origin/Ancestry
Unknown
Lifespan
Unknown
Average Height
6" - 2'
Average Weight
Their mass is unpredictable and not correlated to their size at all. Some of the largest faeries are lighter than feathers, and some of the smallest may as well be miniscule blocks of tungsten.
Average Physique
Faeries are generally tiny and unlikely to build much muscle, due to the fact that most let their magic do any heavy lifting. They are capable of flight on their insectoid wings.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Not only are faeries one of the few sapient species that aren't bound by general human skin coloration, but human coloration is absent from the species entirely. Most of them are brightly colored, many of them multicolored or iridescent. Faeries choose their own colors as self-expression, but they lose their ability to shift colors after they become adults. (The concept of fey puberty is still unclear, but the finalization of color seems to be a marker of adulthood.)
