Catalhuyuk ('cattle-hoy-ook')

Written by Janudz

Mounded city established in Anatolia around 7100 BCE and abandoned around 5700 BC.
  ** large
  ** unstratified by social class
** Each home basically the same shape and size as all the rest. Each home built and rebuilt on top of the rubble, the same way in the same place for centuries, perhaps mellenia, slowly raising the level of the settlement mound. No larger buildings found.
** Interiors reflected differing activities between households; differring murals, objects, tools and other domestic utensils.
** No side doors found, except small upper windows, so smoke is thought to have exited the roof entry.

Defences

** roof entries   ** high walls   ** dense hive-like interrelationship of all structures   ** roof-top entries guarded by smoke from below

Industry & Trade

** agriculture of grains, and fruits   ** wild harvesting   ** hunting   ** goats and cattle   ** fishing   ** knapping imported stone

Infrastructure

** cisterns   ** wells   ** sewers   ** courtyards   ** walls   ** ovens in homes and some shared on roofs

Districts

neighborhoods

Assets

** lime plaster   ** water reserves

Architecture

** mud-bricks, and timber
