The Terror of Vallikas

It was a few summers ago, somewhere near Port Etela, that a necrolord was killed. What, in such a place, could do such a thing? The people of the town couldn't say, and the culprit became known simply as the terror of Vallikas.

Summary

The story goes that someone, or something, with strong magic is protecting the small town of Vallikas. It drove off spirits and sprites, wild animals and dangerous men. When the emperor heard of this magic, he sent one of his necrolords to investigate. Vallikas is a town once destroyed by a necrolord's magic and the protector knew this, and they faced this necrolord in the center of town... and won. The Lord's corpse hung over the center of town for days, chained there with powerful magic. The body eventually fell but it is said that if you visit Vallikas, the magical chains still remain.

Historical Basis

While the tale is told as though it has been ongoing for years and years, it is an incredibly recent development and has only managed to spread so far and so quickly because of the alluring idea that there is something out there stronger than a necrolord. The legend started when a group of northern rebels sought to take Vallikas and disrupt imperial supply lines to the border. The group was thwarted by Kellen Ainenfar, who had been living near the town for less than two years at that point. The defeated northerners called the one they'd faced "the terror." News of this display of power spread and the empire did in fact send a necrolord to find the source of it. Danae Var Srikka arrived in town and demanded to face the so-called terror. She was horrified to find out that her adversary would be her old mentor and fellow necrolord. She was defeated easily, and as in the legend, chained up in the town square. She did not die there, however, and was released by one of the villagers. Ainenfar left Vallikas after this encounter, and was not seen in town again. But as the legend spread, people came to the town, seeking confrontation with the terror. For reasons not immediately apparent, Var Srikka remained in the town, taking on the role of the terror in Ainenfar's absence, protecting the town from this confrontation and perpetuating the tale.
