The North
The land in the north of Nuna is a mostly barren place. The only permanent settlement in the north is a trading hub, Qilak, where the various Iglulitut Kenku and Netsilijut Barri (https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/Hy7ve9n2LX) clans go to trade their goods from their hunt. Qilak is a built-up village, with little in the way of defences. Just one tower in the middle of the city always manned by one Iglulituk and one Netsilijuq as a gesture of goodwill and cooperation. The tower is used as an advance warning should any threat come from the north, or up the river from the south. Both factions can be found throughout the village.
The north is a barren tundra that is covered in ice. The ice that covers the land is constantly shifting with the changing of the seasons in the south and the wind from the north. The constant shifting of the permanent aurora borealis and the ice has lead to the development of strong nomadic cultures in the North. When the clans live on the land, always moving, their mobile villages are known as 'hunts' as they are always moving to follow their prey. The caribou, reindeer and moose are the main sources of food, but some Selki hunts live and move on the coast hunting large aquatic mammals.
The only natural predators in the North are the polar bears, wolves and large raven-hawks.
In recent years the ice and Borealis have become unpredictable in their shifting, up-ending centuries of certainty in the patterns of the shifts that have shaped cultures and traditions.
The mysticism and religious practices are all based around the balance found in the shifting of the ice, wind and lights. The Selki and Kenku pray to the spirits of their ancestors that live in the Borealis. These ancestors are tasked with keeping balance, and will occasionally nudge individuals with a highly personalized sign that they are pursuing the right or wrong path.
Geography
