The Kingdom of Xicolotco
In the arid land of Xicolotco, where vast deserts meet endless plains, a kingdom thrived under the wise rule of King Tizoc. The kingdom was a beacon of civilization amidst the harsh environment, with its people known for their resilience, rich culture, and unwavering faith. The paladins of Xicolotco, sworn under the Oath of Tzeltan, were the kingdom’s most revered warriors, bound to protect their land with justice, honor, and unyielding loyalty.
King Tizoc had two sons: Xochitl, the elder, and Ons’car, the younger. Both were trained from childhood in the ways of the paladin, embodying the virtues of their order and the hopes of their people.
The Brothers: Xochitl and Ons’car
Xochitl, the firstborn, was a natural leader. He was strong, wise, and deeply committed to the Oath of Tzeltan. He quickly became the shining example of what a paladin should be, leading his troops with a stern yet compassionate hand. Ons’car, on the other hand, was different. While equally skilled and dedicated, he had a heart that yearned for understanding and connection with the people beyond the rigid codes of his order. He was known for his empathy, often spending time among the common folk, listening to their stories and concerns.
Though they were close, the brothers often found themselves at odds over the interpretation of their oaths. Xochitl believed in strict adherence to the laws and traditions, while Ons’car saw the need for flexibility and compassion in leadership.
The Fall of Ons’car
As they grew older, the kingdom faced dire threats. A series of natural disasters struck Xicolotco, leading to famine and unrest. The once prosperous kingdom was on the brink of collapse. King Tizoc, growing old and weary, turned to his sons for guidance.
In this time of crisis, Ons’car saw that the rigid adherence to tradition was leading the kingdom toward ruin. He sought a way to save his people, even if it meant breaking the Oath of Tzeltan. In secret, Ons’car made a pact with an ancient and powerful spirit of the desert, hoping to gain the power needed to restore Xicolotco. The pact required Ons’car to break his sacred oath, a decision that weighed heavily on his heart.
The power he gained was immense, allowing him to bring rain to the parched lands and drive away the famine. The kingdom began to recover, but at a great cost. Ons’car's connection to the spirit tainted him, and the once-pure light of his soul became darkened.
The Oathbreaker Hunter
Xochitl, bound by his oath and sense of duty, was devastated by his brother’s actions. The Oath of Tzeltan demanded that those who broke their vows be punished, but Ons’car was not just any paladin—he was Xochitl’s beloved brother.
The paladins of Xicolotco had a secret order within their ranks, known as the Cuauhtlani (meaning "Eagle’s Judgment"). This order, led by Xochitl, was tasked with hunting down and slaying oathbreakers to maintain the sanctity of their vows. The members of the Cuauhtlani were feared even among their own kind, for they carried out their duties with merciless precision.
Xochitl had no choice but to fulfill his duty. Torn between his love for Ons’car and his loyalty to the oath, he donned the mantle of the Oathbreaker Hunter. With a heavy heart, he set out to find his brother.
The Final Confrontation
On a moonlit night in the vast plains of Xicolotco, Xochitl confronted Ons’car. The air was thick with tension as the brothers faced each other, the bond they once shared now strained to the breaking point.
Xochitl: “Brother, why did you do this? Why did you forsake everything we stood for?”
Ons’car: “Xochitl, I did it for our people. They were dying! Our father’s ways, our ways, were killing them. I had to act, even if it meant breaking my oath.”
Xochitl: “You’ve tainted yourself, Ons’car. The power you’ve taken is not ours to wield. You’ve brought darkness into your soul. The Oath demands your life, and as the Cuauhtlani, it is my duty to see it done.”
Ons’car: “I know, brother. But can you not see? I saved them! I did what I had to, and if that means I must die by your hand, so be it. But know this—I have no regrets.”
The brothers clashed, their swords meeting in a flash of steel. Ons’car fought not out of anger but acceptance, knowing that his death was the price for saving his kingdom. Xochitl, though torn, fought with the cold precision of the Cuauhtlani, determined to fulfill his duty.
In the end, Xochitl’s blade found its mark. Ons’car fell to his knees, the light fading from his eyes as he looked up at his brother one last time.
Ons’car: “Thank you, Xochitl. Now, the burden is yours alone… Save our people… my way.”
With those final words, Ons’car, once a beloved prince and paladin, breathed his last. Xochitl stood over his fallen brother, his heart heavy with grief and guilt. The kingdom was saved, but at a terrible cost.
Legacy of Ons’car the Broken
Ons’car became known as “The Broken,” a tragic figure who sacrificed his honor to save his people. His tale became a cautionary legend in Xicolotco, a reminder of the dangers of breaking sacred vows, but also of the complexities of duty and love.
Xochitl continued to serve as the leader of the Cuauhtlani, his heart forever marked by the memory of his brother. He carried Ons’car’s legacy with him, ensuring that the kingdom would prosper, but never forgetting the price that had been paid.
