Marks of Citizenship

It is often easy when abroad in other lands to forget the importance of your Marks. The Green Lady knows, I myself have often nearly forgotten their existence when traveling abroad, only to find that I must dig through my pack to find them upon returning home. Other people simply do not see the reason for them and I suppose they must be excused, for they are foreign and, of course, ignorant of the proper way to do things.

  • Purpose

Marks of Citizenship identify their bearer as a citizen of the Archren Empire, and therefore entitled to all the rights and responsibilities thereof. They were created during the periods of great expansion, when new people were being brought under the Archren banner all the time, and it was no longer easy to tell who was a citizen and who was a foreigner. The Marks were designed to rectify this, allowing their owner safe passage throughout the land, and ensuring that should any trouble arise they were treated as a rightful citizen of the land.

    Document Structure

    Clauses

The Heading: Asserting that these are Marks of Citizenship, and that they belong to the bearer   Date of Issue: The date these Marks were issued to their Bearer   Physical Information: Identifying information about the bearer: name, physical description, date of birth, place of residence, etc.   Training or Certifications: Any training or certifications that the bearer has attained.   Organizations or Affiliations: Any organizations the bearer is affiliated with: practicing members of a church, members of a guild, etc.   Legal Infractions: The bearer's criminal record   Personal Properties or Land Holdings: Any property or land that the bearer owns: Ships, castles, homes, businesses, etc.   Signatures: Active Marks need three; that of the bearer, that of the issuer, and that of the local law master or authority where the Mark was issued.

    Caveats

Marks of Citizenship typically last for life, from the date they are issued, to the day the bearer dies. Natural born citizens of the Empire receive their Marks at age sixteen, immigrants receive theirs on the day they receive legal status, with a special caveat asserting their immigrant status, which could affect their treatment in court. This caveat expires if they do not appear in court after five years, leaving them a completely naturalized citizen.   Marks can be revoked after certain offenses, namely treason and plotting against the crown, or after moving to another country.

    Publication Status

There is a copy in the public records of the town the Mark was issued in that can be called for by law masters in need, and there is a copy born on the bearer's person, which is to be presented whenever called for by authorities.
