Khelone, Goddess Of Water

Khelone was born of the union between Divine Tey and the water nymph Nereia, though exactly when this occurred is shrouded in the mists of time. What little is known of Khelone's beginnings has been passed down through the ages as oral tradition and stories.
Priestesses of the Divine Lady tell of Tey's love for his creations, and how, in the days when the world was young, he would descend to Myrium to walk amongst them and share in their joy of life. It was on one such sojourn along a mystical lake that he was said to have come upon Nereia, a water nymph of prodigious beauty. Whether his heart was ensnared on that fateful day, or some other force drew them together, we know not. But the legends tell us that Tey and Nereia shared three wondrous days of passion, before Tey was drawn unwillingly back to his immortal duties.   Though he walked the lands again, Tey never returned to Nereia's Lake, counselled against it by the Lesser Gods, who feared Noz'Rule would discover their love and use it against Tey. Nereia, grief stricken at the loss of her love, retreated into the lake, and it is said that Khelone was born of her tears. To honor her mother, and the purity of her love, Khelone called the Lake Nereiad, and its' waters are said to cure a broken heart.   The legends say that each day the sun rises with Tey's love for Nereia, and that each evening night comes, symbolizing the loss and sadness in Tey's heart.   Throughout her life, Khelone was a selfless creature. She was very protective of the denizens of her lake and nearby regions, and quick to respond to bandit raids. Whilst she refused to harm living creatures, even the bandits that plagued her home, she used her divine abilities to protect the residents of her region. Attacking bandits would find their way blocked by walls of water, or trapped in a liquid whirlwind. Eventually the bandit raids stopped and Khelone's lake enjoyed centuries of safety.   This changed one fateful day, when a necromancer attacked the lake. Noz'Rule had discovered the secret of her parentage and sent one of his strongest servants to capture her. Clearly, he hoped to ransom her safety against his brother, and sent a hundred of lesser undead minions to support his necromancer.   Khelone had been walking on the far side of the lake, and rushed back to aid her friends. Hoping to return sooner, Khelone threw herself into the lake, only to find herself atop a turtle named Khoben. The turtle swiftly crossed the lake, and Khelone launched from his back into battle. For the first time, she used her divine skills to harm, and the necromancers minions felt her wrath. Icy blasts of water destroyed many minions, while others were caught up in whirlwinds that thrust them into the lake, never to return.   While Khelone was engaged with his minions, the Necromancer threw a bolt of dark magic at her back. At the last second, Khelone was saved by Khoben, which thrust itself into the bolt's path and was slain instantly.   As the Necromancer prepared to summon another dark bolt, Khelone was bathed in a pillar of golden light, and the Necromancer retreated, screeching in terror as a bolt of light smote him to a pile of ash. Khelone looked about in wonder, and felt a glowing warmth envelop her. She felt no fear as her spirit detached from her mortal body, and ascended into the heavens. Tey had decided to protect his daughter by raising her up to the immortal plane, where she served her father loyally, as Protector in Battle and Spirit of Water.   In thanks for assisting her in the battle, Khelone decided to raise the turtle as her own familiar. Tey, acknowledging the bravery of the animal before him at his daughters side, chose to give him a shield upon his back, as well as on the backs of all turtles in Myrium, to serve as a reminder to all of the love Khelone had to protect everyone who lived within her mothers lake.
To some of her followers, she is known as the Divine Lady, an avatar of peace and healing, but to others, she is the indomitable Shield of Tey, the essence of protection and valor.   She is worshipped primarily by beasts humans, nymphs, and sea elves, and is a favoured deity of bearers of divine power, most notably clerics and paladins. Beast barbarians, druids and warriors also follow Khelone for her long history of guarding all the denizens of the natural world.   Above all, Khelone is the daughter of a water nymph and the spirit of water. She is tied to the water features of the world, and at her strongest when she is connected to the lake of her birth. Mirroring her connection to the lakes, Khelone's worshipers derive much of their divine power from water, and most commonly specialize in water magic. Their divine power also waxes and wanes with their proximity to water.   Khelone is the patron deity of two well established and honorable orders. The Covenant of the Divine Lady is an ancient order of Priestesses that use their divine gifts to heal and ease the suffering of all races, save those that follow the evil path of Noz'Rule. Their convents can be found in towns and cities throughout the world, and are most commonly sited along major water features such as lakes and rivers.   The Order of Khoben's Shield takes the symbol of Khoben and Her shield as their sacred heraldry, and swear mighty oaths to protect all living creatures, especially those of the sacred lakes. Its' members patrol the land, serving as bastions of protection and faith. Paladins of this order are the first to respond to the call of their goddess when the foul minions of Noz'Rule attack, and are welcome allies to the followers of Tey, God of Light and Justice. In the direst circumstances, when the might of Noz'Rule is at its height, Khelone will manifest before her worships on the eve of a great battle, bestowing her blessing on a true hearted and valiant follower.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Khelone is often depicted standing tall, on the back of Khoben, her loyal turtle companion, who was also raised by Tey as a reward for his faithfulness. Khelone has pale blue skin and ebony hair, like many water nymphs, and piercing golden eyes. She wears a golden helm and breastplate, gifted to her by Tey upon her ascension, however she bears no weapons. Her innate nature rebels against harming creatures, and only the direst circumstances can rouse her inner wrath.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Khelone was born when Tey gave life to the tears of her mothers grief. Knowing of her daughters innate power, Nereia raised Khelone to care for others as if they were her own kin and to keep the details of her sire a secret. Nereia taught Khelone the secrets and magics of the Water Nymphs before her passing when Khelone took up the mantle of Protector of the Lake.    For over three centuries Khelone, her life made longer by the divine blood in her veins, before Noz'Rule, her uncle, discovered her lineage and sent a hundred and one Undead to capture her. For the first and only time she used the magics of her mother to harm another in order to protect the nymphs and other denizens of her lake.  During this battle the small, then-soft backed turtle named Khoben came to her aid to transport her across the lake. He later saved her life by tossing himself between her and a would-be fatal bolt of dark magic cast by a Necromancer.   Before she could defeat the numbers of Undead sent by her uncle, Tey reached down to bring Khelone and Khoben up to his realm, where he gave her the status of Goddess and his personal protector. In thanks for Khobens' actions, all turtles were given a shield to wear upon their backs as a reminder of his sacrifice.

Failures & Embarrassments

She is embarrassed that she was forced to use magic that she had sworn to use only in peace to protect others in battle.

Morality & Philosophy

Khelone believes that all life, save those of the Undead, is sacred and need to be protected.  Shield-maiden to Tey himself, her teachings are that of defense and how to avoid harming others.
