Soarion

The Soarion   Masters of the sky   The Soarion share a common ancestry with birds and as such, live primarily in the sky. Their homes are found at high altitudes and are very open ended. This leaves little in terms of privacy, but allow the Soarion to take off at any time from nearly anywhere. The capital city is called Avis’ Nidum and is located to the far West of Terra. It is a difficult journey for other species to make should they wish to visit the city. Even with all the accommodations built in order to help simplify the path. These include carved steps, walkways and bridges. Avis' Nidum is commonly referred to as the Aerie by other species around Terra.
  • Community: The Soarion don’t have jobs the same way Humans do. They do follow the guise of a chief and the counsel of the community’s elders. Everyday, tasks are assigned to the members. These tasks include such things as fetching water, acquiring lumber, foraging for food, etc. Most members will simply volunteer when assignment time comes. Though a rotation system is in place in order to avoid having the same people repeat tasks to often. This assignment is limited to what is considered necessary by the community. The Soarion all have hobbies and passions that they follow day to day such as tailors, cooks, arts, music, etc. So long as the chores are being handled, the rest is up to the individual.
  • Sport: The majority of Soarion are big fans of racing. By using the mountain ranges near their homes, the Soarion construct different circuits to participate in. Any one is welcomed to race. Multiple leagues have been established in order to rank the competition and make things fair depending on your skill. The hatch-ling league allows for the youngest members to race each other. (This league is greatly supervised by parents) On the other end of the spectrum, we have the Master's league where the best of the best go head to head for the title of champion of the wind!
  • Basic Information

    Anatomy

Soarion are generally smaller creatures with round bodies. Their torso, being covered in feathers, hides an impressive ability to squash and stretch to the command of the individual. This allows the Soarion a number of benefits from temperature control to adjusting their figure while flying to achieve perfect control of the air.   Their beak are usually pointed downward at the tip. While it can be used to attack via pecking, their beaks are not so sharp as to cause permanent damage. A Soarion's beak is typically between a muted yellow and a light brown color. Their nostrils are found a the base of the beak just before reaching their forehead.   The Soarion have a pair of wings with a beautiful coat of large feathers. Their wings do have an appendage resembling a thumb or finger located halfway across the length of their wings. This allows them to manipulate objects in a limited fashion as well as perform other tasks.   Their legs are particularly unique. A Soarion's feet are closer to a human or primate's hand than any bird's. Facing forward, they have three long digits resembling fingers. On the inside of the feet lies another digit much like a thumb. Finally, on the outsides, near the back of the foot, a smaller digit is observable acting more for support. The palms of their feet are large enough that they have no trouble balancing themselves on one foot for extended periods of time. While they can grasp objects with their wings, they prefer to use their feet.   The Soarion have tails covered in similar feathers to those on their wings. They have muscles developed at their rear to move their tail which helps adjust their movement in the air.   Most members are recognizable by the crests on their heads. The male's genes are dominant and so, children will often inherit the same crest shape and plumage. The same applies for the individual's beak.   Their necks are often seen in a relaxed fashion, however, they are able to extend the neck slightly. This is used for additional reach or for intimidation purposes. The later is rarely ever used.

    Genetics and Reproduction

The Soarion are oviparous creatures. After being fertilized, the female will lay an egg and take care of it for 6 Months until it hatches. In the past, mothers and fathers would be share the task of warming the egg by sitting on it. In the current age, many tools have been developed to help with this process such as, specialized blankets and incubator nests. This allows the parents to live a bit more independently from their unborn child. However, by the 5 month it is important for at least one parent to be present as the egg may hatch at any moment.   As all good parents do, they must regurgitate food into the baby's mouth in order to feed them. This will last for the next month after birth.

    Growth Rate & Stages

Soarion will age faster than Humans at a rate of 1:3. Only 3 months after hatching, a baby Soarion is able to peck and eat it's own food. Around the 1st year, the infant has begun to learn how to speak and walk. Their body should be covered with their feathers as well. By their 2nd birthday, the child should be capable of flying short distances and gliding. Usually with the help of the parents. The children will often be placed on the parent's back before leaping off and training. Children will stay near their family's home until the age of 5.   Once they reach the age of 5, they are given a sort of graduation ceremony, where the entire community welcomes them and recognizes their maturity. This marks occasion marks the fact that Soarion children are allowed to leave their parent's home without permission. There is no such thing as a school in Soarion communities. Instead, everyone shares knowledge among each other. If someone develops an interest in a particular topic, they simply need to ask someone familiar or skilled in that same field and have them teach all they can. This does not mean anyone will have the time or interest. On the other hand, this can quickly lead to an apprenticeship between two or more members. This applies to Soarion of all ages, though the children are the usual clients since their are excited to learn new kills outside their family homes.   Once the Soarion children reach the age of 8, they are given the title of young adults. This marks the time when the youths will now participate with the daily tasks. On the day of their first outing, they are assigned an experienced partner to look after them. The majority of the tasks are handled in groups or flocks and so, should they ever have any questions on future outings, no one is truly alone.   Next, at the age of 13, one final ceremony is performed welcoming the youths into adulthood. This marks the complete independence from their parents should they chose. This also marks when a Soarion is given the chance to ask for another in marriage. Soarion mate for life after all.   Finally, when a Soarion makes to the age of 40, they are officially known as elders. The elders are given the opportunity help with the community's counsel. (Not many Soarion make it to become elders and so, those who are are praised and respected for their wisdom.)

    Ecology and Habitats

High mountains are perfect for a Soarion community. Very few animals make their way up to their villages and cities and the only true threat are bold monsters looking to cause trouble.   A Soarion's house is primarily built with wood with a stone carved floor. Homes mostly consist of 2 or 3 rooms only separated by a cloth door. The largest room is reserved as the center piece of the home. The main entrance, family room & kitchen. The second room is usually the bedroom. A Soarion family will all sleep within the same room. Should they have any additional rooms, these can serve as other bedrooms or storage rooms. Just about all Soarion houses have a porch around the house. This is primarily used as a place to take flight or to land when returning from one. The roof of these houses are designed in a wide cone shape, allowing any moisture to run down and away from the interior. This roof is supported by multiple thick wooden beams. The space between these beams could be considered windows and are completely open. open space is equipped with curtains should someone desire some privacy or wish to stop the wind from passing through the house.

    Dietary Needs and Habits

In the current age, the Soarion are a pacifist people. Truly keen on helping one another in order to prosper.   They are omnivores. No sane Soarion will refuse fish! Some may have a particular favorite as well as a favorite method of having it cooked. When other types of meat are presented, Soarion will avoid if possible but they will eat it as a last resort. Grains are another common and widely adored item. Vegetables are rare in a Soarion diet while fruits are much more common. Berries are considered a perfect snack food while larger fruits such as Pears & Apples will be had for lunches.   To a Soarion, there is no distinction between a hunter and a forager. Should a Soarion be tasked to obtain food, whatever can be obtained will be obtained.

    Additional Information

    Uses, Products & Exploitation

Since the Soarion are closely related to birds, this means they do lay eggs. Members of other species will find these as delicacies and pay high prices for a Soarion egg. The Soarion rarely participate in this trade as they find the though of eating any eggs for that matter, to be revolting and unusual.

    Facial characteristics

The Soarion all have a distinct facial feature known as a crest. These crests are largely hereditary and is commonly used to identify members of a family tree. Crests begin a the top of the Soarion's nose and makes it way across the forehead and finished around the back of the head, sometimes reaching as far as the neck. The crest is comprised of smaller feathers and tufts of feathers.

    Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Eyesight is a major skill of the Soarion. Being an evolution of birds, flight is within their nature. While the Soarion are capable of using magic, performing such feats while flying is next to impossible as the concentration needed for flight does not allow enough for casting. For this reason, magic is rarely ever seen performed by Soarion.
