The Diluvian Stone

The creation and purpose of the famed Diluvian Stone is recounted in Bard's tales, thusly;   When mortals first took to the oceans, both Kos’Kelbor - God of the Oceans and Zal’Kala - Goddess of Wind & Storm demanded their prayers and sacred offerings.   But neither could agree with the other who was ascendant in these demands, the ruler of the oceans upon which mortals sailed, or the queen of the winds they harnessed to do so. Kos’Kelbor would send unpredictable tides to force ships off course if they did not carry a votary image of him aboard, and Zal’Kala would curse with sudden storms those who did not sacrifice sea birds to her before each voyage.   In time, Kos’Kelbor, ever the more thoughtful of the two, searched for a great gift to calm the Storm Queen’s ire, and to mitigate the increasing numbers of drowned sailors he now played host to, for Morr’Rath - Goddess of the Fallen refused to take the souls of those who came to rest in his domain.   With the help of his favoured, the sea nomads known as the Valta Veri, he eventually found the most perfect sea sapphire to be found in all of the oceans of the World of Myriad, using great skill to cut the stone into an object of great beauty. Thus was made the Diluvian Stone.   When the gift was ready, he invited Zal’Kala to meet with him in the centre of the Hundred Isles, and waited for her patiently for many days. Eventually a storm front approached, and out of black and thunderous clouds descended the goddess.   Kos’Kelbor offered her the Diluvian Stone as a gift, contingent on her staying her hand from wrecking further ships; explaining to her that he was not the Goddess of the Dead, and ill suited to care for the drowned in the stead of Morr’Rath.   But Zal’Kala was angered, thinking a gift even as magnificent as the sapphire was beneath acceptance contingent on such a demand. In her irritation as Kos'Kelbor's affrontery, she struck the stone with a bolt of lightning, shattering it into six fragments.   Kos’Kelbor was dismayed, and rather than strike back, stooped to pick up the fragments, great sadness upon his face.   When Zal’Kala witnessed this genuine sorrow, her rage subsided. In reparation, the Storm Queen vowed to him that for those who voyaged upon his waters, “No storm will break, nor winds forsake” any vessel carrying a fragment of the Diluvian Stone, in honour of its worthy purpose. She also promised to take no further hand in storm-cursing ships unless they offended her, with the caveat that if storm come to any ship by its own nature, she would let it take its course except in the most exceptional circumstances.   Kos’Kelbor was satisfied with her compromise, and turned to the Valta Veri who stood behind him;   “Take these fragments and be their keepers. From now until the last tide ebbs and last wind blows, should any vessel of your own or others truly worthy in your eyes, you may gift a piece to them, and by my power and the promise of the Storm Queen, they will be blessed with its protection. Instruct them upon voyages end to cast the stone back into the sea and it will return to you by my power. But warn all thusly - should they fail to return the stone to the sea, or offer us offence whilst under it’s protection, all who thus sailed will be twice cursed should they ever leave the shore again.”   With that, the priesthood of the Valta Veri was founded, and took for themselves the blessed title ‘Diluvi’, and have been the keepers of the fragments ever since.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

As per the Bard's tale of the stone, should the Valta Veri gift a segment of the stone to a vessel, it will enjoy fair sailing and fear neither storm nor current. Should the segment not be tossed back into the sea at voyage's end, then calamity will befall any ship the perpetrator of this covetous crime is carried upon at any time in their life going forwards. These calamities will reflect the ire of the deities involved, with raging tempests, contrary winds, lightning strikes, strong and hidden tides, sea fogs, sudden reefs and shallows and the attacks of sea creatures all being possibilities.
