y Dra Eltanin (ee drah el ta neen)

The festival of y Dra Eltanin in the Drakainan culture occurs when the moon rises red in the evening sky and continues until sunup the following morning.  There is no predicting when the red moon will rise, so all must be prepared to pay homage to the deity Altais - the ONE responsible for plenty. As soon as the red moon is spotted, all must cease chores and begin to prepare the tincture called Dragon's Blood.   The ancient Drakaina believed that the distinct redness of the moon symbolized the beginning of the most fertile period of their women - as all feminine blood ceased to flow for 33 days and most of the tribe's children were born 330 days following its occurrence. In these ancient times, the Drakaina would prepare the traditional Dragon's Blood nectar, using the juice of the pomegranate combined with the sap of the Blood Shrub. The sweet, stickiness of the tincture was believed to bring about "the plenty". Once the tribe's women ingested this nectar, they would fall into a deep sleep and awaken with full bellies.   In current times,  the Drakaina understand a bit more about this red phase of the moon, realizing the red color occurs because of a planetary alignment. The festival of y Dra Eltanin is now seen as a way to honor the great elder women of their tribe. They still prepare the Dragon's Blood Nectar, but instead of ingesting the tincture, they bathe the feet of the five eldest women of the tribe in the red nectar, while these Elders recite the Prayer of Fertility.  This is believed to please the deity Altais who will then smile upon them for 330 days, blessing them with plentiful crops, strong boy-children to send into battle, and wise girl-children to continue the life of the tribe.
