Healers

5 October, 277
The healer finally showed up to take a look at Jack today, and not a moment too soon I bet. I'll say I was a bit surprised when I saw her- people had been talking about a strange new healer that had come from the city, but I didn't expect we'd be getting a proper medicinist all the way out here. She had a fancy little case that she kept pulling instruments out of, and she said hardly nothing as she went about prodding little Jack with her contraptions. I'll say it was right interesting to watch her work, even if by the end she just suggested we feed him rinsodhi tea thrice a day.

There are three main types of healers in Morova: medicinists, clerics, and herbalists (also called folk healers). Though they have many techniques and treatments in common, all three come from different backgrounds and go about their jobs quite differently

Medicinists are often held in the highest prestige, as the only people who can claim this title are those who have graduated from an Academy of Medicine. These schools have a history dating back at least two cycles: it is said that the first one was founded by a cleric in Naboren, and eventually its students opened up their own academies in far off lands. Medicinists are taught to treat healing as a science, and so they take every opportunity to learn about what causes, prevents, and cures ailments of the body. One would be hard pressed to ever find a medicinist without their journal, in which they reportedly keep all of their notes from when they first started their education up to the present. These individuals are occasionally accused of lacking bedside manner, as some seem to consider accumulating knowledge about ailments as more important than curing people of them. Their cures are often effective, however, as their sound knowledge of herb lore is made more useful by their exacting knowledge of the human body.

The second type of Morovan healer is the cleric, sometimes called the faith healer or, more derogatorily, the zealot. A cleric can belong to any faith, though the religion that produces the most clerics is Concordancy. Clerics are less clinical than medicinists, as their knowledge of healing comes not from direct observation but rather from consulting ancient texts and religious sources. These healers tend to believe that Lagan and other mystical forces play a pivotal role in the battle of health and illness, and so base their cures on appeasing these forces. Many denizens of Morova swear by the powers of clerics, as there are many accounts of deadly injury or illness being miraculously cured by clerical intervention, but others are doubtful of the extent of spiritual healing.

Finally, the most common healer in Morova is the common folk herbalist. These people have no formal requirements like medicinists, nor are they organized to the same extent as clerics. Oftentimes, one becomes an herbalist due to a need in one's community, or the knowledge being passed down one's family. These healers depend upon folk legends and old textbooks for their healing ability, and only rarely do they get the chance to confer with one another about their healing methods. However, herbalists are a fairly common and dependable source for healing, so many people are more than comfortable with reaching out to an herbalist for help. They are also the healers with the greatest knowledge of herbs, especially those that grow in their own region, and it is not uncommon for medicinists to humble themselves and ask herbalists for a bit of their knowledge.
