Barony of Tausend-Thal
Overview
Tausend-Thal was established in 665 as a land-grant by the duke of Oradevàsàr to a group of Mòvadhi nobles in gratitude for their assistance in slaying the Dragon of Breytenbach.
Tausend-Thal is essentially a completely Mòvadhi enclave, with only a minority population of indigenous people. Tausend-Thal was established in 665 as a land grant by the Grand Duke before the Grand Duchy joined the Mòvadhi Empire – to a group of Mòvadhi settlers and pilgrims who petitioned for permission to do so, and in gratitude for their leaders' service to Oradevàsàr by slaying the Dragon of Breytenbach.
While loyal subjects of the Empire, the Tausend-Thalers are nevertheless fiercely independent, demanding – and receiving, to a large extent – a great deal of autonomy. They nominate their own Magisters, and the capital, Siebentürm, enjoys many of the privileges of an Imperial Free City, for the simple reason that no force has been inclined, let alone able, to rescind them. Tausend-Thal is surrounded by some of the highest peaks of the Raponik Range of the Earthbone Mountains, with only one way in or out that is passable to an army of any significant size.
Tausend-Thal supplies the Empire with some of the finest refined iron in the Empire; and the plentiful silver and copper mines in the northern part of the barony keeps the people in funds. Tausend-Thal also, unique among the rest of the Grand Duchy, maintains its own standing army, a few regiments of which are often far afield as mercenaries in service to the Empire.
