The Pit
Located in the southern reaches of the Gouge, the Pit is one of the few remaining areas in the region which an abundance of flora and fauna. This should not, however, lead one to believe the Pit is a hospitable clime. Few regions are as magically volatile, and this rampant arcane energy has mutated many of the things living in it. Jaguars with supernaturally keen senses, eagles whose wing beats cause tears in reality through which the spirits of the dead may emerge, and vines that will hunt out and seek blood are just a few of the perils lurking beneath the Pit's impenetrable jungle canopy.
It is also one of the only places where ruins of the Chains have been discovered.
Geography
The Pit is located in some of the lowest elevations of the Gouge, in a long, deep valley between the Ritai and Erviktli ranges. It is relatively narrow--making heading either northwest or southeast a relatively surefire way to escape its depths, if one can somehow manage to discern direction with little light filtering through the dense canopy--but stretches for so long that it took three whole generations to cross to the other side.
More curiously, the Pit seems to stretch far lower in elevation than it should be able to. Some say it is merely a trick of the trees, but those few who have managed to climb above the canopy in its center say that the mountains on either side appear far, far taller than they should, and there are many places where trees seem to grow directly into bedrock--with no topsoil visible for as far as the eye can see.
Rainfall is common in the Pit, though equally common are the bloodrains, which are known to draw all sorts of terrifying creatures from the region's forgotten depths.
