Lysergonil (LIE-sur-gah-nihl)

"It's... well... it works, and it's marginally better than street heroin. That's about all I can say for it."
-Scrapper C. T. Ferrum, in the 107th Annual Proceedings of the Black Buzzard Collective

Lysergonil is a high strength, non-opiate painkiller developed by Geertz Medical Corp. Though non-addictive and remarkably strong, it tends to be used only in edge cases where opiate medications either cannot or should not be used, as it has strong hallucinogenic properties (being a refined version of a substance similar to LSD, the exact identity of which is a highly controlled trade secret), and long term use has been known to cause what has come to be known as Acquired Psychotic Disorder, a syndrome similar to schizophrenia. Geertz has been working on a similar medication with less severe side-effects, but has had little success so far, and the project remains in the trial phase.

Initially hailed as a breakthrough and an end to prescription opiate addiction, Lysergonil is mostly seen as a failure these days. It can be life-changing for those without other options, but most people who take it view it with a fair amount of anxiety and resentment, and it is almost no one's first choice of painkiller. Indeed, though it is non-addictive, recreational use of the drug remains somewhat common, and it's gained a reputation for being more common on the street than in the pharmacy. This has lead to strict regulation of Lysergonil in many parts of the system, and many people have found it incredibly challenging to get hold of their prescription legally because of it--to the point where many buy it illegally from street dealers or travel out to the Belt or JupOrs in the hopes of acquiring their prescription legally.
