The Dungeoneer's Curriculum

The Dungeoneer's Curriculum is the official name of the education system by which the Academy recommends and instructs all of its students. It is based on a method of enrollment in which Students may select a number of Master through a series of staged selections, each of which meets a minimum requirement of credibility from any given Class level. This typically means that the Students make their choices with 2-3 years in mind with a given Master. Each Master, however, runs their corresponding field of study or subject in a number of courses available exclusively to individual Class levels. Subsequently, this means that students do not have to stay with the exact same Master for every stage of their education if they believe themselves better in another subject.   It is permitted within limited exemption rights that if a student and a Master experience a disagreement worthy of disciplinary action, they may forego continuing their enrollment with that Master and be switched into another at the earliest opportunity. However, such discourse requires the approval of the Master and the Headmaster herself.   The stages of course selection within the Dungeoneer's Curriculum are detailed below:
  • Core Scholastics
  • Field of Study Scholastics
  • Elective Scholastics
  • Party Tutorship (Leaders only!)
  • Individual Tutorship
The Core Scholastics section covers the four subjects that all Adventurers are expected to know just to become mature, working adults of a civilized world. They are each derived from the four founding principles of an able-bodied Hero: Combat Knowledge, Magic Awareness, Human Support, and Quest Strategy. The following courses are offered for each broad subject, and all Students are expected to always be enrolled in at least one of these at all times.
  • Combat Knowledge (CK courses)
  • Basic Training — Master Caleus Sidonius Senecio, Master Hurstwic Buckler
Intermediary Training — Master Caleus Sidonius Senecio, Master Marathiel Lærke

  • Novice Arcane Studies — Master Phissa Brightspark, Master Melfeia Feithsing
Adept Arcane Studies — Master Phissa Brightspark, Master Melfeia Feithsing
Expert Arcane Studies — Master Louisa Doornwick, Master Milanni Phoenix
  • Human Support (HS courses)

  • Quest Strategy (QS courses)
  • Journey Guidance — Master Origrys
Dungeon Guidance — Master Gilxox "Gil"
Monster Guidance — Master Crom Dryte
The Field of Study Scholastics are a very different selection, however, and are not easily open for choosing. Students are enrolled in these automatically based on their chosen Field of Study, as they are run by Masters of such subjects that make them directly responsible for cultivating a student's understanding for their specialty. Many of these are inspired by Adventuring archetypes; for instance, a Master of Blades will be responsible for instructing those who wish to perfect only their martial ability, while a Master of Magecraft will be responsible for instructing those who aspire to tame magic, not just understand it. These courses do not change based on a student's Class, and persist throughout their entire academic career. The following courses are sorted based on available Fields of Study:
  • Alchemical Studies (Field of Study) — Alchemists
  • Instructor: Master Miroharai
  • Clan Traditions (Field of Study) — Barbarians
  • Instructor: Master Gudhører (Gunther) Hvarlhar

  • Instructor: Master Diedrick von Hoftiezer
  • Arcane Traditions (Field of Study) — Sorcerers
  • Instructor: Master Crom Dryte
  • Magecraft Mastery (Field of Study) — Wizards
  • Instructor: Master Louisa Doornwick
Elective Scholastics encompass the various aspects of the Adventurer's life which may not quite require so much specialization as to warrant a Field of Study, but are not so essential that they fall into a Core requirement either. Many of these are side projects taught by prominent Masters, while some are more esoteric by design, meant to cater to a niche of recurring examples in students who request a clearer understanding on a given subject matter. There is no permanent list of these Electives, as Masters may not consistently offer them in a given year. However, a student may never choose more than 1 Elective during a given Class level. Known Elective subjects and the people they appeal to are:
  • Extraplanar Studies — Outsiders in particular wanted!

Combining these three Scholastic options totals a given student with 6 courses at any given point in time, each of which has a regularly scheduled meeting time in a Master's assigned or designated homeroom. Masters may, for the most part, instruct at their leisure provided it is within the guidelines set by the Headmaster and given her approval regarding their methods. This is not, however, the end of the student's workload, for the Academy has a tertiary degree of educational expectations which fall to the students and Masters to work out independently: Party Tutorship and Individual Tutorship.   Party Tutorship covers a number of hours invested by a Party Leader in instructing their Party in a regimen of personal training designed specifically for them. During such times, they will often be expected to practice examples of team-building and coordination that they must foster on their own terms. Party Tutorship occurs under the supervision of a Master, who may or may not have a more direct role in instruction during such events. They are not defined, as it is encouraged by the Academy for Parties to find what gives them their greatest success. Many students report this is their favorite aspect of the curriculum, as it truly allows them to bond with their peers on their own terms, and unwind in a productive fashion after coursework is done.   Individual Tutorship, then, is the counterpart to this which pertains to every individual student. It falls to them, Party Leader or not, to build a credible relationship with at least one Master of their choosing who is willing to give them personal instruction on matters that they must overcome on their own terms. This is a very personalized stage of the curriculum that is meant to resolve case-by-case obstacles holding back students in their career goals; the Masters who fill this role end up functioning similar to Counselors in a sense, providing advice and guidance where the Academy's strict regimen may appear intimidating otherwise. This final segment of enrollment is measured purely through a recommendation metric; the Master in question must recommend that the student is in a right state of confidence and capability for advancement before it can commence. This recommendation is often grounded in hours of tutoring spent and the state of the relationship between Master and student. All recommendations are reviewed by the Headmaster before they are finalized.
