Moonkissed flower

...And there I saw it. A stellar plant with deep blue petals floating on a water's surface, emitting strange sparkling lights into the air above it. A bad sign, and my worries were confirmed moments later. An unknown Hunter

Description

Moonkissed flowers are rare, aquatic plants that grow on surface of backwater areas, emitting strange sparkling lights from its deep blue petals. Much like lotus, it possesses green leaves directly below the flower, and numerous hidden stalks, but only one of which connects it to the soil below the water's surface. The remaining free stalks are used to capture and subdue prey. Moonkissed flowers wrap their free stalks around small, non-aquatic creatures, either to strangle them and feed on them, or to subdue them as a form of self-defense.   There are some variations of Moonkissed flowers, some even pose a threat to adult Midrastians, but most of them are incapable of killing anything bigger than a youngling, or similar small critters that find themselves in their underwater vicinity.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

While Moonkissed flowers are mostly parasitic and predatory, the byproduct of their stalks 'sensing' non-aquatic prey in the backwater allows any lung-utilizing creature to breathe underwater. The process is not entirely understood, but this strange property makes the otherwise menacing plant useful in certain places that require extended passage through submerged areas.

Variations

Though normally, most Moonkissed flowers are not able to significantly endanger an adult Midrastian, there is a strand that predominantly grows in jungles and swamps along the southern side of the Continent that is able to symbiotically bind itself with bigger creatures that it can't consume. Though it is not known exactly for what purpose this 'binding' is performed, there are cases of animals or Midrastians surviving extended periods of time held and fed by the flower.    Upon rescue, such Midrastians showed no visible signs of harm, and barely recall anything, as if they simply awakened from a long sleep. Some suggest that Moonkissed flower may have gotten its name from this strange symbiosis - a stalk 'kissing' with one's muzzle or beak as it feeds its captive.

History

Moon Dragons regard this as a sacred flower in spite of the danger they bring even to adult Dwellers. It is common for them to cultivate it for decorative and burial purposes around temples and in moats.   Some Gryphon tribes learned to cultivate and utilize its underwater breathing properties to build hidden entrances by letting a few Moonkissed flowers grow in their vicinity.
