Ironlord Sverting

Svertingskirk, the province of Sverting, is built in the cirque at the summit of Storvätteshågna, a mountain in the Dalarna region of Sweden. Storvätteshågna, like most mountains, was a weapon of the Eldjötnar (fire giants) during Ragnarok, hateful lava drawn from the deep to bury the forests and their inhabitants. When the Eldjötnar fell to cinder and returned to Muspelheim, the mountains quieted, and the living set about collecting from the war-dead.   Sverting was once such scavenger, but having scoured for naught but bent swords and dented helmets, he traveled ever upward, finding eventually that the tarn at the summit was evaporated. But within the lakebed he found massive deposits of metal – not unlike steel to the touch, but harder, sharper – and with a sheen unrecognizable. A man with no small skill in the smithy, Sverting, with the help of his apprentice Otkell, would go on to shape weapons from the stuff – now called eiterstal – which far surpassed even the finest Damascene blades.   Sverting’s renown grew as he armed his fellows, their brands even piercing the hides of fimbul-beasts, creatures mutated by the magical fallout of Ragnarok. Though his band is rich in arms, they oft go hungry for the land around them bound in igneous rock. So they travel, selling their services as consummate hunters for runecarvers, and sometimes trading their blades – but never the secrets of their forge – and always returning home to Svertingskirk to protect their ore.
