Christian Missionary

A number of battles won by Christian kings and centuries of missionaries impressed the power of God into the Viking mind. Humble churches could be found in towns and villages all over the region. The church had few rules at the start. It forbade the consumption of horse-flesh (previously done as a sacrifice to Odin) and the practice of leaving unwanted children to die of exposure, and called for its members to forsake all other gods and idols in favor of the one true God. Still, prior to Ragnarok, much of the northern lands were Christian in name only. Many Norse clung to their old ways, for example invoking Thor before voyages at sea. After Ragnarok and having glimpsed for themselves the gods and monsters of their old tales, many have forsaken the word of God entirely and returned to heathenry.   If you choose this path, you most likely believe that Ragnarok was the Great Tribulation, and you believe that you have survived the Great Winter only through God’s grace and His will. You believe that you have been tasked by God to spread his word to heathens. Your sword is the blade of protection and redemption, and by proselytizing and demonstrating God’s strength through your vanquishing of evil you hope to save the whole world.   Your powers only serve you so long as you serve the lord. You go beyond the average Norse Christian of old, letting the Ten Commandments guide your actions.   The Church forbids the non-sanctioned use of heathen rituals (other powers) and spells (such as gald). Should you fail to keep your code, you are unable to use miracles until you atone. You should aim to accomplish these deeds and more: • Defend Christians from evil creatures • Destroy a famous heathen shrine or idol • Destroy a heathen temple • Convert a chieftain and his village • Found and build a church • Convert a king and his country   Norse Christians face their share of intolerance, but in good company you may find you simply have different means and motives to the same ends. Where you may seek a demon-besieged village to save its inhabitants in God’s name, a Norseman may accompany you for the challenge, fame, and material reward.   The prima signatio – “prime signing” or “primasignan” in Norse, is the first step in the conversion of a heathen. A holy man would lay hands on the heathen, and breathe on him to drive out evil spirits. He would then make the sign of the cross on the heathen’s forehead, and placed a lump of salt on his tongue to symbolize purification. This ritual would allow the heathen to trade with Christians, or to act as mercenaries in their armies. In short, it opened the door to Christianity to the heathen Norse. A Norse who received the prime sign was considered “clean” and can interact with Christians while maintaining belief in the old gods and rituals.
