Bree

Bree stands on the western slopes of Bree Hill surrounded by a dyke topped by a thick hedge. The hill shelters the town, and windows of the houses ordinarily face west and south to catch the afternoon sunlight. There are about one hundred houses in the village, most of them built above the road and set into the side of the hill, with gardens fronting each. Most of the houses are built of honey-coloured stone. These homes are mostly of two stories, look comfortable and solid with their roofs of golden thatch. Cobbled streets run down to the Great East Road, which cuts across the corner of this small town, linking them to the highway. Beside the road, on the Bree hillside, is the King’s Rest; renowned for its food and hospitality.

Demographics

Eriadorians, Dunlendings, and Hobbits

Government

Town mayor - Rory Heathertoes - who is held accountable by a town moot which meets on October thirtieth. The village is considered to be within the realm of Arthedain which maintains a small garrison here.

Defences

A dyke surmounted by a thick hedge surrounds the village. Gates are built where the Great East Road enter the village.

Industry & Trade

Agriculture dominates this region. During the 1640s much of this effort is devoted to supporting the local population as it recovers from the effect of the plague. Most of the inhabitants of the village proper work on local farms or are part of the town guard.

Infrastructure

One Inn serves the travellers on the King's Road and the Great East Road, because of a lack of local shops the inn also serves as a place where goods for travellers can be bought. There is a blacksmith, carpenters and tanners all within the dyke. A water-powered mill is located on the North side of Bree hill. Bree even boasts a small school.

Guilds and Factions

Heathertoe clan - part of the original Dunlending settlers - a large number of the family are scattered throughout the region. It would take a Hobbit ancestry scholar to keep track of all the links between the family members. Thistledews are a slightly smaller clan of farmers and related to the Heathertoes by marriage. Fernwoods have a farm about half the size of the Thistledew farm. Sandheavers - The wealthiest Hobbit family in the district Broadleaf Clan - considers a shitless, irresponsible lot, up to no good when they're up to anything at all. Recognisable as small swarthy men, with more than a trace of Easterling blood. Their proclivities for raiding hen roosts, poaching and other small misdeeds are teh town guard's main worries. Town Guard are located at each of the villages of Bree Land and overseen by Meneldir the Captain appointed by Arthedain.

History

The first ancient settlement endured for some two hundred years, until the Edain, driven perhaps by threat or some unknown call, left their primitive homes and crossed the Ered Luin to join the war against Morgoth.

Architecture

Honey-coloured stone buildings or 1 to 2 stories set into the south-facing hillside are insulated against the winter cold with thick golden thatch. Small market gardens front the homes of the locals.

Geography

Bree occupies the South face of Bree Hill at the junction of the King's Way and the Great East Road. To the North -East lies the small wood of Chetwood, the Midgewater Marshes and beyond the Weather Hills. To the South are the highlands of the Tyrn Gorthad. To the West lies the old forest, the Brandywine and the Shire.
