The Great Upstart
The Conflict
Prelude
When the world was young, magic flowed freely throughout the world. Those who could master magic could master the world. The great mages of the Elves, the runesmiths of the Dwarves, and the sorcerors of Mankind built mighty empires. This all came dramatically to a head with the invention of the steam engine in 29500. You couldn't use magic to drive machines. Until this point, all power had to come from natural sources. The invention of the steam engine allowed machines to be powered in all new ways. It opened the path to industrialization and an explosion in goods and technology. By the time the various empires realized the threat this new technology represented, it had already proliferated. The Elven realms, slow to change and adapt, were mostly sparred. But the Human and Dwarven empires had rapidly growing magical deadzones in the hearts of their greatest cities. The Humans tried to impose restrictions, but the ordinary people saw the great wealth flowing from these factories and revolted. The Dwarves attempted to restrain it, but their slaves, the Gnomes, embraced the technology and used it to stage a successful revolution against the Dwarves in 29575. In the disorder, various new kingdoms and republics quickly rose and fell. Each trying to conquer one another, and the old regimes each trying to keep control. In 29580, the Dorveth Republic successfully defeated the [Auspicious Order] at The Battle of Four Hills and drove them from [Dorve] entirely and won its independence. The Dorveth Republic formed a defensive pact with the [First Gnomish Republic] with the public goal to protect themselves from reprisals of their previous masters. Both however were working to try to undermine the various Magocratic Empires and bring more into their midst. When they invited the [Zuranite Republic] into their midst while still fighting the [Zuranite Order] to their alliance, the other Empires took it as confirmation of the alliance's intent. In 29583, a joint army of loyalist forces burned the city of [Crine] to the ground. For those crimes, the Dorveth and Gnomes launched an offensive against the Zuranites igniting what would eventually become a world spanning conflict.
