Nahala Mountains
Once the land of the ancient Nahala nation, these mountains separating the Northern territories of the Torithian Federation and Ekhmenet have become highly contested in recent times due to their high-quality mineral and core deposits perfectly suitable for modern industry.
Geography
The Nahala mountains are incredibly hard to traverse in most parts, with the majority of slopes and peaks being incredibly steep. There are, however, a number of high-altitude ponds and lakes nestled between many peaks, with the largest and most well-known of these being Sphinx Lake. The unique geology of the mountains also gives them very iconic colorations at parts; the speculated meaning of the word “Nahala” is “rainbow” or “multicolor.”
Natural Resources
The Nahala Mountains are extremely rich in minerals, metals, and coal, all of which are extremely useful and crucial in industry, making the mining industry a critical industry of the region. Iron and copper are the metals most commonly mined in the peaks, followed by other precious metals like silver.
History
During most of the Third Cycle, these mountains were inhabited by and dominated by the Nahala. They were a dominant people for a time, but then at the turn of the cycle, during the Syzygy War, Ekhmeni forces stormed Nahala power and population centers and completely dominated the region, destroying many cities in the process. Because of this, the Nahala mountains and the scattered people still living there were part of the Ekhmeni Empire for a large part of the Fourth Cycle until they came under Torithian rule during the First Ekhmeni-Torithian War; the mountains have been broadly counted as part of the Northern Territories of the Torithian Federation ever since, save for the region surrounding Sphinx Lake that declared independence and neutrality from both countries about halfway through the Fourth Cycle.
Tourism
The multicolored peaks that line much of the Nahala mountains are incredibly common tourist attractions and hiking locations, as are the scattered ancient ruins throughout the range.
