Trolls
"I can think of few monsters more loathsome and foul than a troll. You better hope you have some fire if you ever come across one or you'll likely end up its next meal."
Basic Information
Anatomy
A troll is a large bipedal creature with incredible strength. It walks in a hunched posture, dragging its long arms along the ground. Its hands are equipped with extremely deadly claws and the troll also possesses a powerful bite. A trolls hide is exceptionally tough with a rubbery consistency.
Biological Traits
A trolls most notable trait is its regeneration abilities. Any wound the troll receives is quickly healed and a troll can even recover from dismembered limbs or decapitation if these parts are reattached. Before this severed limbs can continue to function unattached for several hours.
Genetics and Reproduction
Trolls are not particularly bothered with reproduction, as they are far more concerned with eating. Encounters between two trolls are quick and often end with one troll attempting to eat the other. Trolls give birth to live young several months afterward but quickly abandon them in search of their next meal.
Growth Rate & Stages
A troll takes several weeks to reach maturity growing rapidly in size as it eats. Due to their regenerative abilities, trolls can live for an exceptionally long time. The only known way to kill a troll for good is through the use of fire or acid.
Ecology and Habitats
Trolls are incredibly resistant species and can be found in a large variety of climates including arctic regions, forests, hills and mountainous regions, swamps, and The Underdark. Trolls are particularly susceptible to mutation due to their regenerative abilities and will quickly adapt to their environment.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Trolls have a horrific appetite from the moment they are born and will eat anything they can catch and devour in some cases even other trolls. This can lead to a mutation causing the troll to grow to an exceptional size and crave the flesh of other trolls. This hunger will cause the troll to go mad, often grafting flesh and limbs from other trolls onto themselves, becoming a Dire Troll.
Additional Information
Social Structure
While trolls themselves have no society of their own, they will often serve as mercenaries for orcs, ogres, hags, and giants in exchange for food and treasure. They are particularly hard to control, however, often doing as they please.
Uses, Products & Exploitation
In orc tribes, shamans often exploit the trolls regenerative properties. Harvesting the flesh of captured trolls and combining it with several other alchemical ingredients to create a sticky foul smelling green paste that can rapidly heal a wound it is rubbed onto.
