Faith of Fate

Excerpt from a Roman study on exotic religions

In a world where humans (and others) belief in various and numerous gods, the world's traders, merchants, mercenaries, adventurers and explorers have their own faith. Followers of this faith do not believe in a god. They believe in the story of the world.   Believers see the world as a book and themselves as part of the story. There is one owner, there are three writers, a few readers, various heroes and villains of the story and finally countless background characters. Followers of this faith believe themselves to be the background characters in this grand book of Fate. They believe fate has already been written for them. That the story has already been set in stone. It is for this reason that these daring merchants, who travel dangerous seas and face countless challenges set sail without fear in their eyes or with dread in their heart. Their paths have been chosen, their fate decided, so why not enjoy the story that is to come. When you are powerless in an ever powerful world, the best you can do is enjoy the time you are given. At worst, you face the end you were meant to meet. To an extent the faith of fate is less a religion, and more an ideology. To live your life to the fullest extent and to ensure that at the end of the day you have lived a good life, or as its believers would say "Made a story worth reading".   Looking outside the ideological nature of this religion, there are certain parts that make this more mystical and fantastical like you would find in other religions. It is said that some people possess the interest of the readers and writers, perhaps even the owner themselves. These are known as the heroes and villains of the world, the people around whom the story turns and twists. Believers always aspire to become one of them. To truly matter in the grand scheme of things.   Then there's also the readers, also called the weavers of fate. The spinners of destiny and luck. The readers decide which parts of the story are remembered and which ones are forgotten. Which parts they enjoyed and which parts must be changed. They have no control over what has happened or is happening, but they may influence the great writers. This audience ensures the story stays enjoyable to both creator, witness and the person that experiences the story. It is believed that these creatures inhabit all the planes, their lairs made of webs of fate and thorns of consequences.   Then there are the great writers and the owner. It is said the owner decides all. Despite his authority, he merely watches and observes. At most he ensures the great writers can continue their work. The great writers do, as one can expect, the writing of the story. Not through ink on paper, but through the creation of creatures, monsters, antagonists, protagonists, items, magic, the world and the story that connects it all. As long as the writers continue, the world will continue to develop. Without them, the readers will disappear one day as well. Once the final one has left, the world will be forgotten and cease to exist. It is the goal of any believer to ensure the story goes right. So that it may interest the readers, so that it may inspire the writers, so that this story keeps its worth to be owned. It is to be known, the writers aren't true masters of their world. They may set the world in motion, set up events to happen, but their outcome is never certain. They are slaves to faith nearly just as much as any simple mortal. All are slaves to the dice once they are cast.   I'd say it's quite blasphemous to say this world is just that, a story created by some unknown higher beings. Surely there's more meaning. Oh well, my dear readers, allow me to end with an old saying of the faith found in the book Faith and Fate:
Fate isn’t written, it is created

"This may all be a story, but it be known that how we felt was true, and that can never be taken from you"
