Chaunix of Trechtien

(a.k.a. Casse-Coup)

Birth And Younger Years

Chaunix was born as the the son of an simple peasant family that lived from tounging caught whales in the central Trechtian city of Trecht. Just like most families in Trechten, Chaunix' family lacked a surname. Chaunix gas chosen to bear the surname 'of Trechtien', taking pride in his cultural heritage and place of birth. In his days of being a toddler, his parents already had a hard time to keep their son away from the sharp skinning knives that the family would use for handling the whale meat. This was not just regular toddler behaviour, but an obsession for knives and sharp objects. Jeanne, Chaunix' father, was worried this was something they would not be able to alter. Jeanne believed it was a curse of the gods. The curse, he thought, was to give Chaunix an obsession to knives, but not to carve up whale meat for which he was destined to be. But to harm himself or someone else for the sake of pleasuring the gods. A tool to make the story more intriguing for the reader, as believers of the Faith of Fate would think. The architects of the story would made Chaunix an unpredictable, loose gun that they could use for their own plot-twists and unexpected drama. Jeanne felt betrayed by the gods, but could not refuse the purpose of his son. Jeanne could do only one thing, attempt to change Chaunix' destiny. Making him a tounger would not fulfill this destiny. Instead, Chaunix could make use of the curse by becoming a master of throwing, balancing or even swallowing these sharp knives. Jeanne, however, could not give Chaunix the proper training and Chaunix' mother, Mailene, could not bear to watch as her son would become something akin to a suicidal maniac.
With pain in their heart, Jeanne and Mailene decided to bring Chaunix, their first born son at only the age of four, to a travelling circus that was about to leave the city. As the family had not much to offer the circus owner in terms of coin, they gave Chaunix a sachel with 3 knives and promised Lupin, the owner, that Chaunix would become his best knive-thrower as soon as Chaunix could wield a dagger.
The 3 knives were not of expert craft in terms of looks but they were made of strong steel and a hilt made of whale bone, with a small gem made of whale ambergris where the blade and hilt met. On each knife a name was engraved; Jeanne, Mailene and Chaunix.
And so the journey for Chaunix had begun, with the three blades that would serve to be Chaunix' only memory of this biological parents.

The Journey Through Mediterra

Chaunix became part of the circus of Lupin, called the 'Band of Daredevils', which contained actors and performers from all of Mediterra. Although they were all different in terms of looks, they all had one thing in common: they performed acts in which they endangered their own lives for amusement of their public. Those were the requirements for joining this circus, one had to risk their own life in order to perform an act in this circus. If you would get wounded or die in an act it was simply that you were not putting everything at stake for your performance and that you deserved the fate. As a young boy, Chaunix was used mostly for chores and preparing the stages for the actual actors. He saw great acts and performances and whenever he could he would watch the performers train and perform with one another. Lupin forbid him to join in these rehearsals, but that wouldn't stop Chaunix from watching. Not shortly thereafter would Chaunix find one performer that he absolutely adored: Mort-a-Yeux. A slender, blond haired man from Gallia that would perform the most absurd stunts with daggers, shortswords and rapiers. He would give thrilling spectacles of balancing, throwing and even swallowing these sharp weapons. And every, single time Chaunix would clap the loudest behind the curtains. Lupin saw the obsession in Chaunix' eyes and forbid him to touch any knife or sharp object that Lupin owned, not untill he was old enough and ready for teaching in the craft. For two years Chaunix was given this restriction, which made him more and more eager to touch a knife and throw it, just like Mort-a-Yeux would do during his time on stage. In these two years they did performances all over the west coast of Mediterra.
Circusses like these were no for the faint hearted, the performances were very popular among seafarers and seasoned mariners. They would drink, cheer and laugh the entire evening while Lupin's performers made a show. After the show the drinking would continue and the muscled and rough men would tell the greatest tales and stories. Tales about mythical sea creatures, undead fleets manned by skeletons and tales about the greates riches buried with whatever greedy captain who refused to share his treasure on the bottom of the sea. Chaunix listened to these tales with joy and became curious of this great world that one would find in the open sea. Chaunix' heart filled with sorrow as his thoughts dwelled on his parents, remembering the times that his mother would sing him to sleep using shanties that whalers would sing at sea. One night, which felt like any other with these mariners and sailors, Chaunix started to sing the shanty about the wellerman and the Billy O' Tea. Chaunix' voice brought silence to these hardened men, and after a a few moments of the sailors standing agast staring at Chaunix, they started to join him in song. The sailors, of course, all knew this tale by heart and in no time the entire circus was singing in unison, the song heard a mile away. As the song came to a close, Chaunix felt something he handn't felt for a long time; Chaunix felt at home, just as he would feel as if he were with his family.
Since that evening, Lupin would send Chaunix to the public afer the shows ended to bring his young, pristine voice to the sailors. The hardy men of the sea would cheer to him, throwing coins at the young boy and toasting time after time. Chaunix loved it, he loved the stage, the attention and the feeling of being part of a family again.
There once was a ship that put to sea
And the name of that ship was the Billy o' Tea
The winds blew hard, her bow dipped down
Blow, me bully boys, blow
Chorus: Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguing' is done
We'll take our leave and go

She had not been two weeks from shore
When down on her a right whale bore
The captain called all hands and swore
He'd take that whale in tow
Chorus
Before the boat had hit the water
The whale's tail came up and caught her
All hands to the side, harpooned and fought her
When she dived down below
Chorus
No line was cut, no whale was freed
An' the captain's mind was not on greed
But he belonged to the Whaleman's creed
She took that ship in tow
Chorus
For forty days or even more
The line went slack then tight once more
All boats were lost, there were only four
And still that whale did go
Chorus
As far as I've heard, the fight's still on
The line's not cut, and the whale's not gone
The Wellerman makes his regular call
To encourage the captain, crew and all
Chorus 2x
