Harper Wagons

Technically called Harper Wagons, as the original design was created by a Mathias Harper, this useful, hearty wagon caught the name Way Wagon once its original design was taken up by Wayfinder caravans. Way Wagons are covered wagons with wide wheel bases high off the ground. They come in a variety of styles of hood, but the base and wheels remain uniform.   Mathias Harper created the wagon design for a travelling merchant, whom wished to do his business as he needed, but have a protected sleeping quarter from the elements. Most Harper Wagons consist of a raised bed platform in the back, with copious storage underneath, two base benches on either side, also with storage, a fold out table or desk, and strong overhead beams for hanging storage. Within the floor is more storage. This design This became popular among merchants, and the Harper Wagon became more of a design style, and less of a brand name.   The wagon was adapted by the Wayfinders to replace the tents Wayfinders put up when they settled for a time. Upon the invention of the wood stove, Way wagons began adding small wood stoves, bother for cooking, and winter heat. Some Wayfinders adjusted their wagons to have canvas tops in a dome shape, rather than a flat roof, to better hedge to risk of being blown over in the strong moorland wind. Wagons were decorated, passed down among families until whole troupes of old, mutant, forever altered wagons made their way along the roads in feats of oddity and beauty. When folks speak of Way Wagons, they are typically thinking of these.   A type of way wagon is also used for general travel, through the beds are removed to increase bench sizes, and seats are build longer out, the seat with a slight upward angle to keep sleeper in their seats during long trips, and formed the public transportation train in Ghenna before the rise of the rail.
Harper Wagons have a variety of nicknames based on the style of Harper it is.
  • Way Wagon is a catch all term for this style of wagon by laymen standards, though any self respecting wagon wright will call them by their proper name. This is also the phrase used to denote Wayfinder Way Wagons, which are highly customized over their lifetime.
  • Tinker Way Wagons are the catch-all term used for Harper Wagons in the traditional Harper design, typically used by traveling salesmen.
  • Long Way Wagons are the public transport Harper wagons, that forgo the bed for more, and slightly tilted, seating. Some still have the stove for heating in winter months.
