The Sundering: A Drowish Telling

Long ago, our people were as one with the cursed surface elves. We danced beside them as brothers and trusted our untested leaders to rule justly and fairly. Then was born the power hungry Geil’solim, who so wished to exalt himself that his bound his people to the tricksters of the fairy realms. In reward for his allegiance the twisted fairy king Oberon gave him two totems of power, the Orb of Dreams and the Nightmare rock, for him to use to subjugate all elves.     Geil’solim’s first act was to use his orb to rip from the elvish people their dreams and use their power to create a forest stronghold for himself. Unaware of the cost of their actions those loyal to Geil’solim praised him for their own ravishment and clung to him all the more in the sylvan shadows of their new realm. And so Geil’solim began his power grab to control all facets of the elvish people.   But Geil’solim had a brother named Elbain, who was wise and saw the danger of a single elf ruling over his brothers. So, Elbain acted and stole the Nightmare Rock from Geil’solim before he could unleash its terrors on their people. The Nightmare Rock reacted to the nobility it sensed in Elbain and poured its influence into him in order to break him like his weak brother. But Elbain was strong, and mastered the energy of the Rock, though its touch left him black of skin and with hair white as snow. But none of that mattered, because Elbain now had the power to resist his brother.   Elbain returned to those loyal to him, and shared this new-found power among them, starting with his daughter Alisana. While his followers were grateful for this power, Alisana saw how granting it weakened her father and make him less worthy to lead. So, claiming her birthright, Alisana took control of her people who called themselves Drow and sought to break the strength of Geil’solim.   But the Drow were betrayed, for Geil’solim used his orb to infuse the sun itself with wicked fairy magic so that it would blind and weaken us, his great foes. Through this treachery, we were forced to flee below ground to build the strength to one day destroy the surface elves. Alisana, being wise and powerful, performed one last act before leaving the surface. She called upon the Nightmare Rock to send its power cascading through the world, granting magic to all the races upon and within it. She knew that the surface elves desired power above all else and they would weaken themselves battling over it. But we, who were the true originators of Magic would grow in power unimpeded and forge our skill into the blade that would one day claim the life’s blood of the treacherous surface elves.
