The Battle of Golkan and the end of the First War

In the ancient days of the first age, when the Goblins of the swamps flocked to the banner of Glug and named him their lord, did the greenskins wage war upon all the peoples of the land. First to feel their wrath was the gnomes, and soon their great coastal city burned. Second came the bird maidens who lived in peace in the great forests with neither priest nor warrior to aid them. Their end was swift and brutal. But it was here that the goblin lord made his error, for one of the slain maidens was love and life mate to Coronal, son of Impharel, chieftain of the Boar Tribe. A skilled and savage warrior, the man king as he would be known was enraged by the death of his love and brought together the tribes of his brothers to slay the goblins and end the tyranny of their lord.   For five turns of the season did Coronal and his armies hunt the goblins and their conflict became known as the First War. Never before had death in such numbers been visited upon the world, and the lands of the other races looked on with baited breath to see which of these great juggernauts would at last claim victory.   At last, the united tribes of men drove the goblin forces back to their capital, a city of black basalt deep within the swamps called Golkan. The men took joy in the fact that their crusade was nearing its end, but Golkan was the center of the goblin lands and the source of Glug’s power. The Goblin Lord emptied his city and poured it wrath upon the men of Coronal, but the men of the tribes had learned to master their rage and forge it into a fine weapon. So even outnumbered, they proved a match for the goblin army.   The battle lasted for weeks, and soon the swamp was buried in the fallen so that no one knew where the land was any longer. Soon the last of the warriors from both sides fell, leaving only their masters: Glug and Coronal. These titans of the battle field sought each other out and the mightiest duel of all time began on the steps of the central ziggurat of Golkan. For five days and five nights did the warriors battle, taking no rest and giving no quarter. As the sun rose upon the sixth day, the warriors struck their final, fatal blows to one another, the strength of which shattered the ziggurat of Golkan and sent the now dead city sinking beneath the muck of the swamp.   For their great deeds, both Glug and Coronal were welcomed into the world beyond as Gods, and took their rightful places among the pantheon. Legend says that their bodies remain with the ruins of the lost city of Golkan and that any who find them will be granted a measure of their power.
