War of '51

Military action

2951CE
7/1

Two eastern recon vessels are shot down over the deadzone by western contractors. This sparked a 2 day war that sparked a renegotiation of the peace treaty drafted during the Lunar-Micronesia conflict.

As humans began studying the surface of Mars, conflict arose. The Regional Supervisor of PlanetarySurveys set a no fly zone above the Mariners Valley to study the electromagnetic phenomena taking place there. Researchers from the east were shot down in transit over this region, causing a response from the 2nd Defense Fleet (east). This triggered a conflict lasting days with many casualties.   Soon after there was a renegotiation of the previous peace treaty. It set up stricter guidelines regarding expansion and land rights throughout the solar system. Both superpowers agreed to avoid the mysterious and resource rich Mariners Valley and use it as a buffer zone. Both sides knew before signing the treaty that this would only be a temporary ceasefire meant to placate the enemy for a short time and reassess their military strategy.   Ignoring a few projects related to terraforming, scientific cooperation was reeled back heavily after the treaty was signed. Fifty years ago it would have been common to find an engineering facility staffed by personnel from both cultural groups, but no longer.
