Order of the Sign
The Order of the Sign is an ultra-secret organization within the Church of Ogmha dedicated to the proposition that all knowledge must be tested before it is released into the world.
The Sign began -336 DR after Karsus's Folly and the great diaspora spread the Netherese across the realm. A contingent of Free Folk, or Lower Netherese, found their way to Dalaran and vowed to never be subject to the whims of the High Netherese again. The first members of the Sign were wizards, but cautious ones. For years they had the foot of the High Netherese on their necks and they pointed to exploitive magic as the cause. Hardly, Luddites the Sign believe in progress, but at a measured pace. They drew inspiration from alchemy and the process of annealing or maintaining a suitable temperature for a suitable amount of time, and then cooling. This procedure decreases the hardness of an item and they wished to replicate this for new knowledge. Unfettered magical exploration leads to an arms race which will inevitably increase suffering.
The Sign will intercede in a number of ways some bureaucratic and others violent. A member of the Sign may delay research funds or bury in a library a recently found tome they deem as threatening. They do this knowing full well that it well that discoveries will be made and knowledge rediscovered but at more convenient times.
Structure
Knights --- carry out day to day operations, there are a few hundred knights
Knight Officer --- where more than one knight operates they are in charge of field operations, there are roughly a dozen officers each commanding from three to twenty knights.
Knight Commander -- oversee operations in different theaters, there are roughly five current commenders
Master --- set strategy, recruit new knights and oversee the organization, there are four masters
Grand Master --- the ultimate authority
