The Lead Keep

A massive fortress made of imported stone. The cages that once hung off the walls have long been replaced by large banners covering the undecorated walls, reminding everyone that only one person rules Rahn. Three spires mark the old prison towers, the once dark stone now weathered gray like the rest of the walls.

Purpose / Function

The Lead Keep was once the central prison complex of an Empire that spanned much of Wriyeran. It was always intended as more of a governing building than to actually house prisoners. Due to their proximity to the rulers of the prison the three towers that surrounded the building ended up holding politically important prisoners. Currently, the Keep has entirely switched over to governing the city that sprung up around it.

Alterations

The exterior of the towers has remained largely the same though the stone has been weathered. The walls have never been fully replaced, but repairs over the years mean that little of the original walls remain. The cells inside of the towers have been entirely refurbished and expanded some to now house visiting nobles and other officiaries. Much of the rest of the building has had minor replacements generally making the place look less like a death house: only a little less though.

Architecture

The Keep has a utilitarian design both inside and out. It's original design had no reason to look particularly ornate and the Lead Lord has denied most suggestions to freshen the place up. Even still, banners and carpets have been used in an attempt to cover the rather lackluster designs.

History

Built to off load the administrative stress of a vast number of prisoners, it remained as such until the collapse of the empire when it was then left abandoned for a time. Later on, the Guild invested in setting up mines nearby and the Keep was repurposed to house the few individuals who would oversee the progress of the mine. When the city began to expand the rulers gravitated towards the Keep both for being defensible, and also having the authority of a structure that has stood the test of time.

Tourism

People do not tend to visit the Lead Keep as a tourist. Whether that's because the structure is rather plain, the fact that it stands imposing above every other building in Rahn like a threat, or that the Lead Lord has no desire to entertain guests, whose to say.
