Flesh Warp
Flesh Warp is a magical disease that came to be after the The Cataclysmic War. While it is most commonly spread by being bit by an already infected individual, it has also been known to occur spontaneously in individuals for no rhyme or reason. It's easily identifiable by the warped physical appearance of the infected with common features being but not limited to; Enlongated limbs, Disfigured faces, Extra appendage formation, formation of chitin based weapons and loss of cognition which is common in all cases.
Transmission & Vectors
The disease is mostly spread through contact from an already affected individual, usually, infection occurs when an infected individual attacks someone. While this is usual, the disease itself sometimes occurs spontaneously for reasons unknown, but there are some theories.
Causes
While it is known that the disease occurs due to exposure to wild magic, many Scholars and Clerics further theorize that it may occur in lands away from the Chaos Lands due to surges in wild magic in other locations, causing the bodies of people present to warp and change into that of, what scholars call, a wild magic zombie. Direct contact further spreads the surging magical energies, thus spreading the disease. Another possibility that some clerics believe in, is that this disease is a scourge from the gods, meant to wipe out the unworthy but not many people believe this as gods could wipe out the unworthy in much more efficient ways.
Symptoms
The symptoms warry as the overgrowth of flesh and bone in random locations but it usually occurs in stages. As soon as a person is infected by the disease, large boils form around the body in random locations but nothing more occurs for 4 to 6 hours. After this, the true torture begins, as the boils explode into masses of flesh and bone, the liquid inside the boils melting and repurposing surrounding flesh, usually disfiguring the body heavily. Extra arms and weaponized limbs lunge out from the boils as the boiling liquid melts and elongating the limbs, including the head. It's also at this stage, that most people die completely, with the body moving on base instinct while the internal body remains mostly intact.
Treatment
No treatment is known. It is recommended to wipe out the infected with fire to make sure the disease doesn't spread further than necessary.
Affected Groups
Almost all life forms made of flesh and blood are affected by this. Immune are races that have zero affinity for magic or are not made of flesh and blood.
Prevention
The only way to prevent infection is to wear thick layers or plate-mail armor or to stay well out of melee with the infected.
Epidemiology
The disease usually occurs in remote regions in cases observed till now thus there's been no chance to see the effects if a large population centre were to be hit by it. The biggest known outbreak yet occurred when the Fort Iyalith Outbreak but information about the event is a tightly held secret.
History
Elderly people and Scholars of old speak of monsters made of warped flesh that fought in The Cataclysmic War. These same people believe, that the disease is what caused the monsters to be formed during the war, and some believe it has found its way to the new world. The threat this disease represents was once again shown when the Fort Iyalith Outbreak occurred in Zionar , thus reinforcing the need for a force to combat this scourge but nothing official was decided between the city-states.
Cultural Reception
Most people do not know of this disease at all but those who do know, fear for the day that an outbreak goes out of hand.
