When the humans made a Treaty with the High Spirits to bind tricksters to the seasons.

Before the Treaty was made, tricksters were free to pass between the physical and spiritual worlds whenever and however they pleased. They had accelerated healing powers in the spiritual world, so if a trickster was injured in a battle with a human they could slip into the spiritual world, heal very quickly, and return to continue the fight. Humans did not have spirit binding and couldn't fight back effectively and were dying more and more each day.   With no other options, shamans sought the High Spirits' help, and to their amazement, after centuries of disinterest, the Sun Spirit answered. When asked what humans would give the High Spirits in return for their aid, the tribes promised to worship the High Spirits as their gods. The tricksters and one small tribe objected, but when the Sun Spirit asked what they would give, they would not offer a single gift. Displeased, the Sun Spirit made the Treaty with the grassland tribes, and the tricksters were bound to the seasons. No longer could they move freely between the worlds, and their healing powers were stripped. The Sun Spirit did allow the tricksters a fighting chance, and the season that bound them was their best advantage and strength. The tricksters cried for more, so the Sun Spirit gave that every time a trickster was killed a curse was left on the land. The tribes were pleased and thankful, and worshiped the High Spirits, but the tricksters were bitter and angry and they haven't forgotten yet how the Sun Spirit cheated them.
