Grasslands of Makkah
kingdom of grass and sky
Most of the continent is comprised of prairie grasslands, all of which belong to the Makkah Nation, divided into two main regions: west and east. Western grasslands have shortgrass and eastern grasslands have tallgrass, due to the amount of precipitation each region gets.
Nomadic bands roam the grasslands, following wild herds of bison. Other creatures include wild horse herds, deer, wolf packs, solitary grass cats, other mammals, and a variety of birds, bugs, reptiles, and amphibians. Shifters and tricksters may also live anywhere in the grasslands.
More nomadic bands live in the west, while more permanent peoples build farming villages in the east. They grow a variety of crops and have the time and stability to weave quilts, construct large buildings, build canoes, and live in higher populations. Despite living different lifestyles, grassland tribes consider themselves united in the Makkah Nation as they all worship the High Spirits.
Geography
Most of it is flat or with small rolling hills. Rivers and streams criss-cross the length of it, most starting from glaciers in the western mountains and many ending in one main river that flows to the east sea, cutting the continent almost in half except where it splits into two rivers, the larger flowing to the sea and the smaller feeding into the northern marshes.
Wind blows constantly in the grasslands, sometimes fast and harsh, sometimes slow and quiet, but always there. This sets the grass rippling in waves, similar to the ocean.
It's so flat you can see for miles in all directions, the horizon so straight it seems you could run straight into the sky.
Fauna & Flora
Huge herds of bison roam the grasslands, along with wild horse herds, deer, wolf packs, solitary grass cats, other mammals, and a variety of birds, bugs, reptiles, and amphibians. Shifters and tricksters may also live anywhere in the grasslands.
The grasslands are made up of grass, either short or tall. Short in the west, tall in the east. Short grows to about the knee, tall to the waist and up.
Wildflowers of all kinds, shapes, colors, abound in the grasslands.
Certain types of trees grow near dependable water sources, clinging to the banks of streams, rivers, and lakes.
Natural Resources
Grass, wood from trees, water from rivers, meat from bison and deer, trainable horses.
