Keepers

Keepers are the lore-tellers, the librarians. A Keeper takes care of books and history, and advises those who ask. A Keeper is a highly valued person because of their great knowledge, as well as their ability to negotiate with dragons.

Qualifications

A Keeper must first be an Apprentice at a Library. Apprentice Librarians are first trained at a Library by the librarian Keepers, where they learn Draconic, negotiation skills, writing, and how to take care of books. Once this part of an apprenticeship is done, a wandering Keeper takes the Apprentice out on a short trip near the Library.

Requirements

Once the Apprenticeship is over, an Apprentice Librarian chooses whether they are going to be a wanderer or a librarian. However, an Apprentice must be an adult in the eyes of their species before they can become a Keeper.

Appointment

Apprentices that are becoming Keepers will be shown into the private area of the Library by their teachers, where they will be granted their research book. While there is no celebration at the Library, the new Keeper is likely to go out with friends and family that night to celebrate.

Duties

A wandering Keeper negotiates with dragons for the people in the towns they come across. They might accept payment in gold, or food and a bed for the night. They're also just as likely to pay for their meal with a story. A librarian Keeper helps out anyone that comes into their Library, especially with matters like a harmed book.

Responsibilities

Keepers are first and foremost responsible for their Library and their research. A Keeper is also responsible for teaching Apprentice Librarians, and oftentimes taking care of the books in the Library and the towns they come across. Keepers are also teachers for people in their town or city, especially wanderers. Wandering Keepers often tell stories to children in the towns they come across. A Keeper is also needed to negotiate with dragons that live around populated areas, as other humanoids generally can't communicate with dragons.

Benefits

Keepers are likely to be paid well for their assistance if the town or person can afford it. They also have high status due to their reputation as good advisers. A Keeper is a good person to have as an ally.

Accoutrements & Equipment

A Keeper's most important item is their research book. Every Keeper gets one when they begin Keeping, and every Keeper personalizes it until they run out of room. At that point, they return to the nearest Library to give their research to the Library and to get a new book.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

If you are deemed unsuitable for duty as a Keeper because of injury, then you'll get a cushy desk job for as long as you want it. If you are deemed unsuitable because of some other reason, like abusing your power, then it's more likely that you'll be banned from working in the Libraries and will have to find another job.
