Hells Gold- EldurFell's Sulfur Industry - By Luna Sverovarg

Hi I am "KorakiSaros" and I am Geology Graduate. My personal favourite commercial "mineral" is asbestos but I just did not think the derverg would be mining that near active volcanos as it is not found typically in those regions. Anyway what way to put my degree to use... fantasy world... real minerals because I can.

Introduction

Any Gaian shown the yellow mineral would most undoubtedly be familiar with it. Sulfur also occurs on their home world of Gaia. For the people of Nidavesh the mining and export of sulfur is a large part of their economy. The Derverg spend long hours in hot dangerous conditions to mine the mineral.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Mined in its solid state it is a lemon yellow mineral with small crystals.

Physical & Chemical Properties

In its pure solid state it is brittle, odorless, tasteless and insoluble in water.

Compounds

Sulfur is highly reactive and therefore makes multiple compounds. Sulfur dioxide is what has the rotted egg and bitter taste sulfur is known for.

Geology & Geography

In the Aldranari Volcanic range, the largest operation outside of Eldurfell.

History & Usage

History

This mineral existing near hazardous volcanos has earned it the moniker of "hell's gold" or "helvitis gultch". Its association with volcanos and fire made it easy to associate with destruction.

Discovery

Sulfur is as abundant on Lysandus as it is on Gaia. Its first discovery on our planet is undocumented but it was used even by early peoples to fumigate homes and as fungicide for crops.

Everyday use

Sulfur has many uses but I will list the most common for the material coming from Eldurfell's mines.
  • Pesticide/fungicide
  • production of sulfur compounds (fog machine sulfur)
  • manufacturing of fertilizers
