Elf

Elves are one of the oldest sentient species and respectively hold one of the oldest civilizations on the face of Lospiri. They command the empire turned monarchy of Virenta. Overall, the Elves have had one of the largest cultural impacts on Lospiric history.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Elves have thinner builds than humans and tend to have light-coloured hair, but they are similar in most other ways. Their key external determinant, however, is the point their ears infamously form.

Genetics and Reproduction

Elves have a similar reproduction cycle to humans, gestating for about 10.5 months from conception to birth. The males have no cycle of reproduction except a buildup of sperm which must be released at least once every 80 days or so after maturation. The females have menstrual cycles every 40 days or so that last between 8 and 10 days each.

Growth Rate & Stages

An Elf matures physically around age 20, and the oldest recorded Elf to die naturally was 770 years old.

Ecology and Habitats

The optimal environment for Elves depends on their subrace, but most prefer temperate, wet climates good for their delicate skin and delicately balanced innards.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Elves are omnivores, meaning they can eat both meat and vegetable matter.

Biological Cycle

Normally, if the weather cools, an Elf's hair will grow more quickly. Vice versa when the weather warms.

Social Structure

Elvish society is based on the ideals of beauty, freedom, expression, and blood. These things are very important to Elves and have acted as catalysts for past conflicts. Otherwise, Elvish societal structures are extremely detailed, complex, and hierarchical. Nearly every aspect of the culture is measured by self-prescribed systems and jurisdictions. This level of order, however, is subject to ideals of the people. If the commoners see an ideal being infringed upon, they will revolt, as has happened many times in the past.

Facial characteristics

Elves have very pointed faces, which are accompanied by pointed ears. They generally have large cheek bones and sometimes a strong jaw and brow. Their noses vary wildly, but usually are small.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Elves are mostly found in the western hemisphere of Lospiri, though an offshoot, called Drow, dwell in the upper levels of Dunpiri.

Average Intelligence

Elves vary wildly in mental abilities, but generally have at least one mental ability at a higher than average capacity.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

As part of the inheritance from their Fey ancestors, the Elves have a genetic form of darkvision, allowing them easier sight at night and in caverns and other such dark places.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Men often have personal names that have ties to war, a craft, a religious meaning, a natural wonder, or an ancestral tie. Women often have personal names that have ties to beauty, the goddesses, the ocean, the moon, or a noble "sound" to them. There are countless surnames among the Elves, as it is a custom to formulate a new surname if one wishes to abandon their family tree. Thereby, Elvish family trees are messy and hard to understand, even to the Elves themselves. Some common surnames include Amastacia, Amicar, Holimion, Ilphelkiir, Ithilnodel, Liadonian, Nidnavent, Pagella, Siannodel, Vespera, and Ybarra.

Major Organizations

Elves control Virenta and by proxy have a stranglehold on much of the seatrade, only truly competed with by the Halflings of Leathtalam in that regard.

Beauty Ideals

Elvish beauty ideals generally either reflect a deep tie to nature or elaborate dresses made of rare furs and silks.

Gender Ideals

Men are expected to work, perform and create art, and defend the land in times of need. Additionally, it is customary to send a son on a journey as a coming of age ceremony. Women are expected to be tidy, perform art, keep house and inn, and be kind to strangers and courteous to those in need. It is customary to wed your daughter away, initiate her as a druid, or bathe her in a river as a coming of age ceremony.

Courtship Ideals

Men are expected to engage the lady in the relationship. Any good date should include fine dining and wine, not beer or mead.

Relationship Ideals

Monogamy is law in Virenta but lightly enforced. Polygamy is seen as immoral and degenerate.

Average Technological Level

Elves have achieved a technological level equal to the early Renaissance period of Earth's history, but their prowess in military and travel has been amplified by arcane discoveries.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

The main language in the Elvish world is Elvish and its various iterations. These include Modern Standardized Elvish, Drowslur, and High Drowic.

Common Taboos

Restricting freedom for anything short of a war or threat of a war is enraging for an Elf. Disrespecting an Elf's house is equally as insulting. Additionally, what happens in the home stays in the home. It is unbecoming to speak of domestic abuse unless it is very severe, and mental illness is often ignored.

History

The Elves have a long and detailed history spanning to the first year of the Ancient Compendium, 50,000, when the nation of Virenta was founded and formed in a village which would grow to become Anena Edhil.

Historical Figures

Emperor Ecthemmin Mynas is seen as a hero to the Elves of Virenta. His dynasty saw the Empire become the Monarchy, ensuring a more stable future for their kind.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

The Elves care not for races other than the Dwarves, who they see as friendly rivals, and the Humans, which they see as political tools. Generally, Elves have good or neutral relations with other races.

Elf

Ability Score Increase Your Dexterity increases by 2.
Size Medium
Speed 30 ft.

Age: Although elves reach physical maturity at about the same age as humans, the elven understanding of Adulthood goes beyond physical growth to encompass worldly experience. An elf typically claims Adulthood and an adult name around the age of 100 and can live to be 750 years old.
Alignment: Elves love freedom, variety, and self- expression, so they lean strongly toward the gentler aspects of chaos. They value and protect others’ freedom as well as their own, and they are more often good than not.
Size: Elves range from under 5 to over 6 feet tall and have slender builds.
Darkvision: Accustomed to twilit forests and the night sky, you have superior vision in dark and dim Conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in Darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in Darkness, only shades of gray.
Fey Ancestry: You have advantage on Saving Throws against being Charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.
Keen Senses: You have proficiency in the Perception skill.
Trance: Elves don’t need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day. (The Common word for such meditation is “trance.”) While meditating, you can dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive through years of practice. After Resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep.
Subrace: Choose from one of the following subraces: Drow, High Elf, or Wood Elf.  

Drow (Dark Elf)

Ability Score Increase: Your Charisma score increases by 1.
Drow Magic: You know the Dancing Lights cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the Faerie Fire spell once per day. When you reach 5th level, you can also cast the Darkness spell once per day. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
Drow Weapon Training: You have proficiency with rapiers, shortswords, and hand crossbows.
Sunlight Sensitivity: You have disadvantage on attack rolls and on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight when you, the target of your attack, or whatever you are trying to perceive is in direct sunlight.
Superior Darkvision: Your darkvision has a radius of 120 feet.  

High Elf

Ability Score Increase: Your Intelligence score increases by 1.
Cantrip: You know one cantrip of your choice from the Wizard spell list. Intelligence is your Spellcasting ability for it.
Elf Weapon Training: You have proficiency with the longsword, shortsword, shortbow, and longbow.
Extra Language: You can speak, read, and write one extra language of your choice. You learn one script of your choice associated with that language.  

Wood Elf

Ability Score Increase: Your Wisdom score increases by 1.
Elf Weapon Training: You have proficiency with the longsword, shortsword, shortbow, and longbow.
Fleet of Foot: Your base walking speed increases to 35 feet.
Mask of the Wild: You can attempt to hide even when you are only lightly obscured by foliage, heavy rain, falling snow, mist, and other natural phenomena.

Languages. You can speak Common and Elvish. You can read and write the Common and Rellanic scripts.
