Northern End

One of the four Ends of the World, the Northern End is a cold ocean area that stretches along the northern edge of the known world. It is inhabited mainly by aquatic Abyssal Entities.

Geography

The very bottom of the Northern End has never been seen. However, it is said that the ocean floor here is similar to other cold oceans in that it is made out of gravel with a sparse covering of seagrass.

Localized Phenomena

Storms

Freak storms large enough to be seen from the mainland are known to start at random. Many organizations have tried to research the strange weather phenomena, however no useful data has been successfully retrieved. These storms have exceptionally strong winds and rain, as well as strong lightning strikes. All who have been caught underneath one of these storms never lived to tell the tale.

Fauna & Flora

Abyssal Entities

Prior to the year 1980, the ocean was presumed to be completely devoid of animal life. However, in recent years, more and more Abyssal Entities have been sighted in the general area. It is believed that the Entities originated from the Nameless Island in Elida, where the terrestrial variants of the creatures are known to live. Because nobody has been able to observe the entities and return home alive, little is known about the interactions between the Entities in their ecosystem. However, as seen from the mauled corpses of human explorers that sometimes wash up on the coasts of Escora, Cerephe, and Elida, these Entities are most likely carnivorous predators that will attack anything that moves, other Entities included.

History

The area was discovered in the year 1100, when brave explorers attempted to sail beyond the northern edge of the Known World. This journey marked the end of all 7 of the explorers' lives. Since then, a number of organizations have attempted to send people and machines into the Northern End. None of them have returned.
